Time flies when it’s 100+ degrees outside. Wait, that doesn’t seem right. It is sweltering outside and I praise God for the air conditioning I am fortunate to have at work and at home. I pray for those that are not so lucky in these temperatures. I thank God for your support and prayers that provide work conditions that allow coherent thought and creativity that do not come easily in less comfortable temperatures (you don’t want to be too close when I’m overheated and hungry!).

I thank God for you as you have supported SC students and alumni in serving God around the world. On our website can find some heart touching photos of the work God did in the lives of our students on a number of international mission trips this summer.

Resident Director (RD) training has started mid-July and the Resident Assistants arrive early August. All of our current RDs are SC alumni - do you know them? The whole campus is gearing up for the new school year. We have athlete orientation on Saturday August 11 and new student orientation on Saturday August 18. Pray for these students and their families as they begin this new journey with us.

Not only do we have new students joining our ranks, we have a number of new employees that we are praising God for as we begin a new year. You'll be able to read more about these wonderful people next month.

As the temperatures rise, I pray you will be refreshed by the Holy Spirit. And may your summer come to a end that glorifies God.

Together in Christ,

Amy Thompson '96, M.A.

Sterling College Welcomes Community College Graduates

Sterling College has signed 19 new partnership agreements, known as the Guaranteed Admission Advantage, over the past year. These partnership agreements have been formed with 18 Kansas community colleges and with Hesston College. Dr. Gregory Kerr, vice president of academic affairs, crafted the agreement to give transfer students a seamless transition to Sterling College and Sterling College Online.

A typical articulation agreement is a partnership between a community college and a four-year college stating which classes will transfer from the community college. Traditionally, four-year colleges only accept some of the classes that community colleges offer. The GAA allows the student to focus on obtaining their associate’s degree without being concerned with the possibility of retaking some courses for their general education requirements. Articulation agreements are common, but Jim Cox, coordinator of online recruiting and partnerships at Sterling College, said that community college leaders are particularly interested in Sterling’s Guaranteed Admission Advantage. Sterling College names 2012 Athletic Hall of Fame Recipients

The Sterling College Athletics Hall of Fame aims to honor alumni for their elite performance as a Sterling College student-athlete. This year's Hall of Fame class consists of two individuals and one team that will be inducted at Homecoming on October 20th during halftime of the football game. Both individuals played basketball at Sterling College. Jason Ontjes '99 is being inducted as a men's basketball player while Kristina Barrow-Littlejohn '03 is being inducted as a women's basketball player. The team being inducted is the 1987 KCAC Men's Soccer Championship Team. Read more here.

A Smorgasborg of Kansas Fun!

Sterling College is going to the Kansas State Fair Sept. 7-16. We will have a booth in the Meadowlark Building where we look forward to seeing each of you and giving you a little SC treasure to take away.

We are also looking for volunteers to work four-hour shifts with 1-2 of our SC employees. Each volunteer will recieve a gate pass and FAQ sheet in advance of his or her shift. These shifts run each day from 9-1; 1-5; and 5-9, except the first Friday on Sept. 7 when the first shift is not needed.

If you are interested in volunteering for a shift, please contact the Alumni Office for availability. Please note that we are limiting each shift to only one volunteer this year.

Connecting to the Past, Looking to the Future

Are you ready for Homecoming? The brochures are on their way and information will be online shortly.

Young Alumni (those of you out of school for 15 years or less) will have a special gathering place under the tent to the south of Smisor Stadium during the football game against Ottawa University. It's the perfect place to catch up with one another and don't forget to update your information for a chance to win great SC prizes! There will also be a special free gift for all those who stop by and graduated SC from 1997-2012!

Along with all of the other reunions, there will be an All-School Theatre Reunion to give our alumni the chance to honor and thank Gordon Kling and Diane DeFranco-Kling for there 85 years of combined service to the College.

Sunday October 21 at 2 p.m. there will be a variety show honoring the Klings. If you are interested in participating with a song or memory of no more than 4 minutes in length, please contact the Alumni Office at 620.278.4228 or alumni@sterling.edu. The show will run approximately 2 hours only with people selected from those who have notified the Alumni Office in advance to be included in the program. Due to time limits, not all acts may be selected. If alumni are unable to attend there are still ways to be involved. Please send video clips of no more than 4 minutes or a memory and/or congratulatory note on an 8 ½ x 11 paper to be presented to the Klings. There will be a reception following the performance.
