Staff member walks 140-mile pilgrimage in Spain

For years, Manuel Garcia had heard of “El Camino de Santiago,” the 500-mile passage through Spain that countless pilgrims have walked for more than 1,000 years. But Garcia, 66, had never thought much about making the trek himself.

“And then I got the itch and said I would love to do that,” laughed Garcia, director of Computing and Information Technology at UNC’s School of Social Work. Read story

New scholarship to assist students pursuing work with survivors of trauma and sexual violence

Amy Louise Brannock, MSW ’07, was a source of courage and inspiration, especially to survivors of sexual assault. She was a survivor herself. Even a diagnosis of ovarian cancer in 2001 could not claim her spirit, strength and hope.

And now, a scholarship established by her family will benefit students who are interested in pursuing work with individuals who have experienced trauma and/or sexual violence. Read story

Field Instructor Appreciation Conference held

Recently, the School hosted its annual Appreciation Conference for Field Instructors and Task Supervisors. The School has a strong commitment to supporting its field instructors, from more than 300 agencies in the Triangle and Piedmont areas. 125 of these social work professionals spent a day at the School interacting with faculty, attending workshops and networking.
