It has been a year since we started running courses out of the Blue Heron Studio. And what a year of creativity it has been. The literary arts have been celebrated and a select few manuscripts have made their way to the editors at Penguin. Visual arts have been both created and exhibited; works by both young and old.

While we perceived that the greatest need was for programming for youth we have found the greatest uptake has been with adults. What does that tell us...perhaps that a missed opportunity in childhood is being fulfilled in adulthood? It is interesting to note that a study showed that while only 20 percent of children get to take music lessons, 70 percent of adults regret not having learned to play an instrument. While not supported by the data, our experience suggest a similar ratio of those who learn to draw, paint, and sculpt, and those who wish they had. There are still some spots available in all of our upcoming programs. Check the schedule for the creative experience that's right for you!

Books and Brunch January 2013 with Linden MacIntyre...

The first Books and Brunch event of the 2013 year is going to be big. Linden MacIntye, the award winning author of The Bishop’s Man, will be in Uxbridge on January 27th at Wooden Sticks Golf Club. Books and Brunch is that perfect coming together of good food, good friends and great reads. It is a bulked up book club meeting where attendees get to hear the words on the page brought to life by the one who first strung them together. The nuance and subtleties revealed in the voice of their creator.

Linden MacIntyre’s voice, as well as his face, is well known to many of us – he was a long time journalist on the fifth estate television program. His work on television earned him nine Gemini Awards. Born in Newfoundland, MacIntyre was raised in Cape Breton, N.S. His career has moved through various forms of media as a print reporter, television host, radio host and author of both non-fiction and fiction titles. In 1979 he began a legal fight that progressed to the Supreme Court of Canada, ultimately winning rights to public access to certain documentation. He has traveled to the Middle East, Central America and USSR as a documentary reporter on the television program the Journal. The diligence of his work on the fifth estate helped wrongfully convicted Steven Truscott bring forward new evidence in his case.

Whether working on journalistic pieces or writing fiction, MacIntyre has a talent for the written word. His fictional work invites the reader to explore complexities of human relationships that are sometimes as harsh as a Cape Breton winter. It is always rewarding reading to visit distant locales when they are brought to life by those intimately familiar with both the landscape and the people; MacIntyre is such an ambassador. Both the 2009 Scotiabank Giller Prize winning The Bishop's Man and, the more recent, Why Men Lie is set on the rustic island. The Catholic churches sweeping under the carpet approach to priests caught with their pants down and those responsible for the cover up is explored in The Bishop’s Man. Why Men Lie follows the story of the sister of the troubled priest in The Bishop’s Man as she navigates a new relationship with a man with a past that is anything but transparent.

MacIntyre will be interviewed by our own Ted Barris.

The event takes place on January 27th, at 11:00 am. Tickets for Books and Brunch are $25. MUST RESERVE as tickets are almost SOLD OUT.
