Steven takes a break from captioning to eat a home-cooked meal

Mesembs: The Titanopsis Group is coming together more beautifully than we could possibly have imagined.

We have received illustrations from three South African artists, the Bolus Herbarium, Kew Gardens, and a dozen enthusiastic photographers from around the world. Design and layout is complete; the book weighs in at 208 pages.

As we approach the finish line on our first book, we wanted to share our progress—and a sample chapter—with you.

We've just returned from nine intensive days of work with Steven at his Sphaeroid Institute, just a little more remains to be done: two final paintings now being completed, a half-dozen maps finalized this week, captions tweaked and re-tweaked, indexing to commence this Saturday... Every last detail is an opportunity to create a more beautiful, interesting, and valuable book.

At last! You may now download a sample chapter from our website. It is a small hint (at full size), and if you like what you see, we hope you'll place an order today.

Every chapter in the book—and indeed, the series—begins with a specially commissioned painting. Here, a watercolor by Gerhard Marx depicts two views of Didymaotus lapidiformis in habitat. Excellent photographs of plants in habitat and in cultivation pair with Steven's engaging text to produce a book you’ll read from cover to cover—and return to as you puzzle out the intricacies of these amazing plants and their histories.

New book announcement

Little Sphaeroid Press has signed a contract with German author and Lithops expert Harald Jainta for his unique new manuscript entitled Wild Lithops. A dozen trips to South Africa and Namibia in search of every known lithops taxon have led to this fabulous new work that approaches Lithops from an entirely new perspective.

The book will feature, for the first time in print, habitat photos of nearly every lithops, showing the breathtaking and unfiltered variability found in nature. Full of trip reports and field observations, this is a first-hand account of one man’s search to understand a beloved genus of succulents.

We will begin subscription sales of Wild Lithops this winter and expect publication in 2013.

Botanical Artists' Association of South Africa features Little Sphaeroid Press

We were honored when Gerhard Marx asked for permission to discuss our upcoming book series on the mesembs in an article he was preparing for The S.A. Botanical Artist, the Newsletter of the Botanical Artists' Association of South Africa. The goal of the article was to expose the incredible skills of one of South Africa's most talented botanical upstart, Janet Snyman. Five of her watercolors and thirteen of her pen illustrations will appear in The Titanopsis Group. Download the article from our website and check it out!
