Süskind

Süskind

Australian premier during the Jewish International Film Festival
Inspired by actual events, Süskind is “about a hero with dirty hands” who saves thousands of children from the ill fate of labour camps during World War II in the process of protecting his own family.
Walter Süskind is fired from his job, as ordered by the occupiers, but manages to secure a position of responsibility at the Jewish Council in Amsterdam. More important than the income it provides is the protection it offers him and his family from deportation.
One evening, Walter witnesses a Jewish family being torn apart during a check. The parents are delivered to the Hollandsche Schouwburg where all the unfortunate ones are herded. Walter Süskind is responsible for arranging their transportation to Germany for work – at least, that is what he has been told.
A tale of opportunity, risk and the infinite toll of war, Süskind wrestles with the complex moral dilemma of putting the safety of strangers above that of the ones you love.
The Dutch movie Süskind (English subtitles) will be shown on:
the 10th and 18th of November at the cinema in Elsternwick (Melbourne) and on
the 3rd and 12th of November at the Event Cinemas, Bondi Junction (Sydney).

Holland Focus received double passes (valued at $38 each) to give away:
for MELBOURNE: 5 double passes for complimentary entry to one Festival session of choice (excluding opening/closing night) and
for SYDNEY: 1 double pass for the Süskind screening on the 12th of November.

Hanneli Goslar, 11 Oct 2012

The new temporary exhibition in the Anne Frank House, ‘So I’m now fifteen’ – Photos, letters and books of Anne Frank, was opened on October 11. The exhibition focuses on the short life of Anne Frank (1929-1945), and features one or more photos, letters and books from each year of her life. Some have only recently been acquired by the museum, and are being shown in public for the first time. Hanneli Pick-Goslar, a Holocaust survivor and friend of Anne Frank, opened the exhibition, and spoke of her friendship with Anne Frank and their final meeting in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The exhibition can be seen in the Anne Frank House until March 2013.

Photos in the exhibition show a vivacious and curious girl who at first lives a normal life: Anne on her father’s lap, at the beach with her sister Margot, with friends at an ice rink, with classmates at the Montessori school. But the German occupation of Holland and anti-Jewish measures change her life drastically. The Frank family has to go into hiding, and Anne is forced to grow up quickly. In one of the letters in the exhibition, to her father, Anne writes: “You can and may regard me as fourteen, but with all the trouble I’ve become older.” In hiding in the ‘Secret Annexe’, Anne develops into a talented writer. On 13 June 1944 she writes in her diary: “Another birthday has gone by, so I’m now fifteen.” Shortly afterwards Anne, her family and the four other people in hiding with them are betrayed and arrested by the Nazis.

New acquisitions
The exhibition includes a number of new acquisitions. There is a tea set, for example, and the book 'Dutch Sagas and Myths', in which Anne wrote 'a memento of Anne Frank', given by Anne to her friend Toosje Kupers just before she went into hiding. The book ‘Basic Principles of Botany’ is also on display. Anne was given the book by her parents for her fifteenth, and last, birthday. On the flyleaf she wrote her name, the date, and ‘the Secret Annexe’.

Hanneli Goslar
One of the photos in the exhibition shows Anne on her tenth birthday, arm in arm with Hanneli Goslar and other young friends on the Merwedeplein square. Hanneli, now 83 years old, talked of her friendship with Anne at the opening, as she also does in a film on show in the exhibition. The two friends first met at nursery school, and spoke to each other for the last time in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Anne died in Bergen-Belsen in March 1945. She was fifteen years old.

Australia will be hosting the Anne Frank Travelling Exhibition "Anne Frank - a history for today", to be launched on the 4th of February 2013 in the Jewish Holocaust Museum in Melbourne.

Proposed new ECB powers for banking supervision

Proposals for a single supervisory mechanism (SSM) for banks in the euro area are an important step in strengthening the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). In the new single mechanism, ultimate responsibility for specific supervisory tasks related to the financial stability of all Euro area banks will lie with the European Central Bank (ECB).
The Commission is also proposing that the European Banking Authority (EBA) develop a Single Supervisory Handbook to preserve the integrity of the single market and ensure coherence in banking supervision for all 27 EU countries.

President of the European Commission José-Manuel Barroso said: "We want to break the vicious link between sovereigns and their banks. In the future, bankers' losses should no longer become the
people's debt, putting into doubt the financial stability of whole countries".

Coalition commits to Marysville festival

The Victorian Coalition Government has allocated $20,000 towards this year’s Marysville Sparkling Wine Festival following its success last year and to further raise the profile of the region as a leading food and wine destination.
“The festival is a priority event that is playing a key part in implementing the Coalition Government’s four-year strategy to increase visitation, build on key tourism product strengths and ensure that events leave a sustainable legacy, which includes creating jobs for the Marysville region,” Ms Asher said.
Member for Seymour Cindy McLeish said the week-long festival had also become an important industry event leading up to the Melbourne Cup, where local food and wine makers were able to showcase Marysville product.
“Last year’s festival grew from the previous year, including events such as the Australian Sparking Wine Show increasing participation from 68 to 216 entrants and the 2011 Gala Dinner selling out due to high demand. The Festival’s Business Breakfast has also grown over the last two years, with this year’s event expecting an attendance of 200 people. Future plans are also under way for the inaugural Sparkling Wine Conference which is scheduled for 2013. The event is part of a transformation that was taking place in Marysville and its surrounds. The region is bursting back to life with signs everywhere that it is rebounding stronger than before,” Ms McLeish said.

The 2012 Sparkling Wine Festival will be held from 23 October to 5 November 2012 and includes The Australian Sparkling Wine Show, Business Breakfast, Gala Dinner and a corporate golf day at Marysville District Country Club.

Victorians get power to pedal, European style

Victorians are the first bike riders in Australia to get access to a new type of pedal power.
The Victorian laws have been changed to enable European style, power-assisted ‘Pedalecs’ to be classified as bicycles, rather than motor-bikes.
“The change in law means that a Pedalec can be used without the need for registration or licensing,” Mr Mulder said.
The European Pedalec operates with a maximum of 250 watts, with a safeguard allowing the power assistance to kick in only when the bicycle is travelling at less than 25km/h and the rider is pedalling.
This means the Pedalecs are safe to be used in a cycling environment, while at the same time allowing riders to travel further and ride with less effort.
For more information about Pedalecs please see VicRoad - Pedalecs and for more information on bike rider road rules please see VicRoad - Bicycle Rules.
