Student Panel: Women in Politics of Activism and Sexuality (1 Lyceum Credit)
Political Science students will present their research projects on women and politics from domestic and international perspectives. A student led discussion will follow the panel presentation.
4 pm to 5:30 pm, TC103
Facilitator: Dr. Terza Lima-Neves

Selene Medina‬, Sophomore
"IN DEFENSE OF THE FAMILY: THE UNITED STATES AND ITS POSITION ON CEDAW"
Women are significantly underrepresented in politics but more importantly women's basic human rights are constantly being violated. To help alleviate this issue the United Nations' Commission on the Status of Women drafted a treaty, which delineated universal human rights for women. Since its implementation in 1980, the Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Discrimination Against Women or CEDAW has been ratified by 187 states. Currently, there are only seven countries around the world that have yet to ratify CEDAW. The United States is one of them. This research project analyzes the treaty and the reasons behind the US decision not to ratify it.

Brian Robinson, Junior
“DIFFERENTIATING CITIZENSHIP: HOW FETAL PERSONHOOD CAN ALTER THE BOUNDARIES OF CITIZENSHIP‬”‬
This research will be a normative theoretical analysis of a particular state level policy, fetal personhood bills, and their subsequent effect on a nationally determined classification, in this case citizenship. Fetal personhood bills grant citizenship rights and privileges to the embryo, thus this research desires to determine the extent to which this can alter the ability of women of child bearing age to fully recognize and exercise their rights and privileges. Furthermore, this research will use fetal personhood bills as an assessment of a new trend in the federalist system of the United States- how state laws are now being used as tools to implement change on a national level.

Nompumelelo Nobiva, Sophomore
“MOVEMENTS TOWARDS AN ARAB-SUMMER.”

Women are being directly confronted with economic challenges, illiteracy, poverty, cultural challenges due to stereotypes concerning gender roles, and political issues that serve as continued resistance towards transformation and permanent change in the Middle-Eastern region. This study analyzes women’s roles in the movements taking place in the Middle–East, known as the Arab Springs, and applies specific focus on the states of Tunisia and Egypt in applying critical analysis to the impact of the women’s movements on civil rights and women's rights issues in these two countries.

50th ANNIVERSARY OF CIVIL RIGHTS MARCH IN CHARLOTTE
March 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the civil rights march in Charlotte in which many Johnson C. Smith students and faculty participated. Hundreds participated in the petition drive, march to the post office, and rally at Johnson C. Smith for demands that became the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The event was organized by Davidson College students and included participation from several colleges throughout the Piedmont section of the state.

On Saturday March 29 Davidson College is hosting a campus reunion of those march participants to commemorate the event and to reflect on the civil rights straggle, then and now. A panel discussion at the Alvarez Student Union at 3 pm will be followed by a 5 pm reception and then dinner at the Brickhouse restaurant in Davidson.

For any questions, contact Rebekah Ayscue in the Davidson Alumni office at 704-894-2450 or reayscue@davidson.edu.
