Cultural differences – how to approach doing business internationally

Melissa started her Adidas career as Financial Accountant at Adidas Australia in 1996. She rapidly rose through the ranks working in a variety of roles in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Germany. In her current role as CFO of Adidas-Taylormade she is based in the United States. Melissa is renowned for her collaboration skills and ensures that all parties are all on the same ‘ledger’ at all times, working to drive the business together, and making the right strategic decisions to grow the company.

“I love everything about my job. As a finance professional I interact with the marketing, product, sales, and retail teams. I see every facet of the business through the numbers. The added dimension, which I have personally experienced, is the exposure to various cultures by working in different countries. It really gets you to challenge your mind set or approach to tackling a task and helps you to unlock potential in yourself and in others that you might not have otherwise".

Australian Impressionists in France

15 Jun - 6 Oct 2013 | The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Federation Square

On 15 June 2013, the National Gallery of Victoria opened a major exhibition, Australian Impressionists in France. Amassing over 130 works, the exhibition will focus for the first time on the remarkable story of Australian Impressionist artists who lived and worked in France from 1885 to 1915. It includes important paintings by John Russell, E. Phillips Fox and Charles Conder, as well as never before seen works by lesser-known artists.

The exhibition shows that during these years Australian art took place beyond the confines of Australia, and examines how the expatriate artists were part of the story of Impressionism in Australia.

Many artists create paintings of beautiful gardens

Monet created a beautiful garden to paint it

It is hard to imagine that before Claude Monet and his friends wandered out into nature to paint it, a practice now called plein-air landscape painting, very few artists did this before them. It was simply not done… it caused a furore. But Claude departed from the salon practice and led the way of a new movement, the Impressionists.
The wonderful Monet’s Garden exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria tries hard to connect you with the place where these paintings were created. The natural rock walls as you wander in are as if walking into his country house. Large back-lit photos greet you of the artist in his garden, as if he is interrupted by your visit.

The paintings are astounding, all 63 of them. Starting with some early works, including two portraits of the artist and his wife by his friend and fellow impressionist Auguste Renoir. Waling from room to room one progress through, giving a sense of his chronological life. Here he visited London and was influenced by Turner and created a mesmerising almost abstract painting of the London bridge in heavy fog. There he visited Norway and painted with refreshing bright colours the little red houses at Bjórnegaard.
Much has been written about Monet’s waterlilies, but only a visit to this exhibition will give you a sense in how many ways Monet painted these water plants and how he played with the reflections surrounding them. Almost all of the paintings are of nature, a nature he created with his own hand from what was originally a swamp into an exquisite cascade of colours, movement and light.
Your incredible journey through Monet’s Garden ends in his garden. The specially commissioned multimedia installation was created in November in his garden at Giverny and immerses you in the daily beauty of Monet’s garden. The only thing is missing is the smell from his pipe.

Anne Frank, A history for today

AFrank

Following its great success at the Jewish Holocaust Museum and Research Centre in Elsternwick, Melbourne, the exhibition has travelled to the Gold Museum in Ballarat.
The exhibition will be on display in Ballarat till 11 August 2013.
It then travels around major cities and regional towns throughout Australia in this and the coming years.

Message
The worldwide tour is coordinated by the Anne Frank House and is directed at young people from 11 to 18 years old. “The diary of Anne Frank is a book with a strong message which is still relevant for all young people throughout the world: ‘learn to live together with other communities and respect each other’s culture and habits.’ And that is what we want to explain in this exhibition,” according to Ronald Leopold, general director of the Anne Frank Foundation. “We want to pass on the message to the younger generation. Therefore supplementary material such as a catalogue, a DVD and instructions for guides and schools will be part of the exhibition.” The Anne Frank Exhibition travelled through New Zealand from 2010 till 2012 and was a huge success. The expectations for Australia are very high too.

Fragrant blooms at court

From 22 June to 15 September 2013 Paleis het Loo will be mounting an exhibition ‘Flower Palace Het Loo’ which focuses on fragrant blooms and plants in the palace and gardens.

Set Sail for the 2013 International Tall Ship Festival

tallships2

In 2013 more than 20 tall ships from around the world will gather in Australia for the International Tall Ship Festival and the Sydney Auckland Tall Ship Regatta – the first event of its kind in Australasia.

Over 1,500 places are now available for members of the public to join a Tall Ship for ocean passages and coastal voyages to Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart, Sydney and Auckland.
Voyages are open to people of all ages and backgrounds, and no sailing experience is required. During each voyage a professional crew will explain and teach you everything you need to know about navigation, sail handling and square rig sailing. Participants will be able to explore the Australian coastline, meet people from around the world and gain a unique insight into our maritime history.
For more information on how to join a voyage, visit www.tallshipfestival2013.com.

Rarely do Tall Ships from the northern hemisphere visit Australia, and most of the vessels sailing to Australia are undertaking World Voyages. As they sail the seven seas they will visit Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Antarctica and the Americas. The first vessels will arrive at Fremantle in July, and will spend several months exploring the spectacular Western Australian, Victorian, Tasmanian and New South Wales coasts.
Mr Stephen Moss CSC, President of the Australian Sail Training Association said, “We are delighted to be able to host the largest gathering of Tall Ships in Australia and New Zealand for a generation. This event will help to establish a vision of sail training within Australia and convey the excitement, challenge and romance of Tall Ship sailing to millions of young Australians”.

The three month Festival Program will see Tall Ships celebrating with Parades of Sail, street parades and festivals in several cities, including the International Fleet Review – celebrating 100 years since the first entry of the Royal Australian Navy’s Fleet into Sydney Harbour.

International Tall Ship Festival Program:
Fremantle 27 - 29 July 2013
Adelaide 29 - 30 August 2013
Melbourne 09 - 14 September 2013

WINTER WONDERLAND OF FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT

ARTS CENTRE MELBOURNE

Dance, Theatre and Music for the whole family from Wednesday 31 July to Sunday 18 August. From a retelling of the Brothers Grimm’s Hansel and Gretel to a lavish dance spectacle inspired by flowers and insects.
Kids will love Miss Ophelia by Dutch children’s theatre company, Het Filiaal. Based on the bestselling novel by Michael Ende, who also wrote the much-loved classic The Neverending Story, Miss Ophelia tells the story of a failed actress who begins collecting and looking after stray shadows. Forging strong friendships with her shadowy companions, Ophelia opens a shadow puppet theatre with her friends and becomes the successful entertainer she always dreamed of being. Told through a mixture of real-life actors, shadow puppetry and live music, Miss Ophelia will warm the coldest heart this Winter from Wednesday 31 July – Sunday 4 August.

From blooming flowers to creeping insects, Mother Nature’s four seasons are brought to life on stage by award-winning dance company Momix’s new production Botanica from Wednesday 7 – Sunday 11 August. Inspired by the patterns of nature and the science of plants and flowers, Botanica follows the rhythms of the seasons, the changing shape of life on earth and the passing of a day. Set to an eclectic score ranging from birdsong to Vivaldi, nature's changing imagery is revealed through MOMIX’s talented dancers, who embody everything from falling petals to buzzing dragonflies to fossilised dinosaurs.

Inspired by Hansel and Gretel, Swiss company Trickster-p reimagines the fairy tale in their walk-through, contemporary haunted house .h.g. from Thursday 8 – Sunday 11 August. Armed with a set of earphones, an iPod and a torch, the audience – one by one – will walk into the very heart of the story, guided through a series of rooms and passageways, each a bone-chilling world of its own.

In a highly imaginative fusion of animation, mime, puppetry, projections and live music, actor Sam Longley tells the tale of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer in this production by Perth Theatre Company and Weeping Spoon Productions. The seas have risen and many have died and now, in a last-ditch effort to save the human race, Alvin must venture down into the mysterious depths of the deep blue sea to find a new place for everyone to live. In the Fairfax Studio from Wednesday 14 – Saturday 18 August, Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer has won a slew of awards world-wide, including Outstanding Solo Show at the New York International Fringe Festival, and has two productions touring simultaneously around the globe.

Families will love The Extraordinary Shapes of Geoffrey Rush, an exclusive exhibition to Arts Centre Melbourne. Featuring costumes, photographs, moving image and personal items, the free exhibition in Gallery 1 from Saturday 6 July – Sunday 29 September explores Geoffrey Rush’s ability to create iconic characters, including Captain Barbosa from The Pirates of the Caribbean films.

Looking for: Henk Oliedam

My name is Simon van Marm, called John. I am 60 years old and looking for my roots and want to get in touch with my real father. I recently found out that Gerard van Marm was not my real father. It turned out that my mother (Gré Mosch 80) was dating Henk Oliedam and they were going to get married in November 1951, but after a quarrel that marriage did not happen. She was pregnant with me. Henk, who knew that my mum was pregnant, migrated to New Zealand in February 1952. He married there and they had two children Anne and Brent (Michael). In 1998 they divorced and Henk left for Australia. The family in New Zealand and Henk’s siblings in the Netherlands have not heard from him since 1999. It is known that he lived on Coochiemudlo Island in Queensland and has/had a relationship with Joan Grimes, illustrator and author.
Please contact me if you have any information about Henk Oliedam, born 18 May 1932.
