New Restaurants on the Scene

Over the past few years the Wilmington area has become a hidden gem for fresh, local cuisine. We are experiencing an influx of young, creative chef's who are opening new restaurants each with their own special flair. The common denominator amongst them all; however, is sourcing local produce, meats, and fish. We see flexible menus that change daily and seasonally based on "what's fresh today".

It is exciting and refreshing to add some new recommendations to our list! Among our latest local favorites are Sealevel City Gourmet and Canape.

Nikki Spears, chef/owner of Sealevel City Gourmet is by definition what we foodies call "Pescatarian" serving seafood, sushi, and vegetarian dishes that she says are influenced "from the corners of the earth." She also offers one of the most extensive vegan and gluten free menu's around.

The culinary team at Canape is a trifecta of talented chefs (Matthew Gould, Simon Arnold, and Stephen Wine) whose offerings, although adventurous and highly technical with a nod to modern molecular gastronomy, still provide lovely, comfortable dishes that any palate can appreciate and enjoy. They also offer an intriguing mixology cocktail menu that compliments the flavors of each dish. An example: "The Fatty" is prepared with a duck fat bourbon/maple/orange and bitters. Simply intoxicating!

We wish success to these new up and comers to our area and are happy to have more choices to temp our taste buds!

Are You Ready for Summer?

Well, we know who is! All of the guests who joined us for our first annual Seaside Spring Renewal Retreat this past weekend. Everyone left in high spirits, rejuvenated, sated, and happy! Thank you to everyone who attended the retreat and those who helped to pull it together.

We had four days full of healthy, delicious food, cold-press juicing classes, yoga and wonderful camaraderie. We are already looking forward to next year!

Let's Go Shopping~Beach Style!

So, you have come down to the beach for some fun in the sun but Mother Nature decides to give us some rain instead. Well, not to worry because there are a plethora of other activities to enjoy. One of those being shopping! On Pleasure Island and in Wilmington, you will find some truly unique stores and boutiques that showcase the flavor of the coast. Whether you are shopping for clothing, art, food, or kitschy souvenirs we can point you in the right direction.

Artful Living Group is a studio/retail store that exhibits the work of local artists and also offers creative workshops and classes. You will find paintings, glass work, mosaics, custom fabrics and more. They often host “meet the artist” receptions with wine and appetizers.

The CB Surf Shop carries all of your beach essentials. Shop here for hip beach wear, brand name accessories, sandals and jewelry. They are also part “sporting goods” store with surfboards, paddleboards, and wetsuits. These local surfers can tell you where to catch the best waves on any given day and may even be willing to share their favorite surfing spots.

Now, if you want to take home North Carolina grown veggies, hand made cheeses, jams, or breads then a visit to the Veggie Wagon is a must. They fill growlers with choices from North Carolina's best breweries and feature many regional wines. Once per week they host a wine and beer tasting. You never know what you may find as they add new products all of the time. You will get a true “taste” of North Carolina at the Veggie Wagon!

Both Carolina Beach and Kure Beach each hold weekly outdoor markets (rain or shine) where you will find food, wine and many local artisans selling their wares. Yet another way to support small business!

Honestly, these are but a few of our favorites. We will take you shopping in Historic Downtown Wilmington in our next post! Until then, support your “mom n’ pop’s” by shopping small and shopping local!
