Twenty-three million dollars has been committed toward the $40 million campaign goal to make communities stronger and healthier, including recent awards from Charter One/RBS Citizens Bank; Comcast Internet Essentials; Dr. Scholl Foundation; The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation; The Boeing Company; and the Otho S.A. Sprague Memorial Institute.

How two Chicagoans signed up for health insurance

Enrolling online for medical insurance has been difficult, but many are getting help from 21 neighborhood organizations that are part of LISC's Healthy Communities Campaign. Arnie Aronoff encountered multiple barriers, but with help from Jane Addams Resource Corporation was able to successfully complete his application. Read the story.

Frigid weather doesn't stop health insurance outreach

Despite the heavy snow and frigid temperatures, health insurance "navigators" affiliated with LISC partners have reached more than 14,000 individuals with information about their insurance options.

Chicago Tribune reporter Peter Frost featured Garfield Park Community Council's Tracelli Rockford in the lead paragraph of a Dec. 20 article, noting that Tracelli and others spent hours promoting the insurance options during the season's first cold snap. LISC and neighborhood partners are continuing to enroll residents ahead of the March 31 cutoff date for new coverage. Learn more about LISC's efforts.

Op-ed: To rebuild in this new world, start with neighborhoods

Foreclosures and housing vacancies have hit many neighborhoods hard, but the rebuilding job can be done by engaging neighborhood residents, wrote Susana Vasquez in a Dec. 30 op-ed piece in Crain's Chicago Business. "As I listen to our neighborhood-based partners," Vasquez wrote, "I hear a readiness to think boldly, use data and build power to change the trajectory of this city by first changing the trajectory of our neighborhoods." What’s the impact of programs to improve safety, housing or education? Five neighborhood partnerships are using data and tightly structured programs to find out. It's a steep learning curve, but all five groups are finding value in the data.

This year's theme is "The Power of Neighborhoods." A panel discussion exploring the past, present and future of community development in Chicago begins at 3 p.m., followed by a special 20th Anniversary video, keynote address from Mayor Rahm Emanuel (invited), awards presentations and reception.
