From Elena Megalos:
I think of these figures as "characters": instruments for storytelling. In process and appearance, they embody make-believe--the impulse that guides our earliest stories (and often the ones we continue to tell). These collages involve dress-up, the assumption of masks. A few of the characters might be familiar: the three bears, the owl and the pussycat, Red Riding Hood's wolf, derivatives of Lewis Carroll's white rabbit. This is not accidental; I mean to pay tribute to the tales that moved me first. You'll find unfamiliar characters here as well.
Since 2007, I've been making stop-motion film shorts with paper "puppets." In order to act and emote, these puppets are composed of various move-able parts: bodies, limbs, costumes, facial expressions. The figures in my collages were guided by a similar process, and utilized many of the same materials: bristol board, handmade papers from Nepal and Bhutan. Taken from context and frozen in motion, I hope that these characters inspire fresh stories in their viewers.
