July 4th Highlighted by Parades, Concerts and Fireworks

Wednesday, July 4th, will be a full day of celebrations in Fredericksburg and Gillespie County. A children’s costume parade around Martkplatz kicks off at 8:00 a.m., while the community parade moves down Main Street at 10:00 a.m. A patriotic program follows the parade at Marktplatz with big band sounds by the Sentimental Journey Orchestra. A pre-fireworks concert at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park by Top Flight, a combo of the Air Force Band of the West, starts at 7:30 p.m., with the fireworks at dark (approximately 9:30 p.m.). In addition, Luckenbach Texas celebrates Independence Day with live music and a patriotic lawn mower parade. Becker Vineyards hosts a chili cook off, while Pedernales Cellars celebrates with kite flying.

Night in Old Fredericksburg Salutes Agriculture on July 20-21

Taste, shop, hear, learn and experience our German and agricultural heritage at the Marktplatz in downtown Fredericksburg. Night in Old Fredericksburg runs from 6:00 p.m. to midnight on Friday, July 20, and from 11:30 a.m. to midnight on Saturday, July 21 (admission is free on Saturday until 6:00 p.m.). Second Annual Fredericksburg Opera/Music Festival Set for July 19-21

Texas Hill Country Opera & Arts, a newly incorporated not for profit, will showcase a great weekend of opera and music in Fredericksburg. The weekend kicks off on Thursday, July 19, with “Youth Night at The Opera,” featuring motivational speaker and Olympic swimming gold medalist Josh Davis and his sister Tynan Davis, mezzo soprano opera singer now residing in New York City. On Friday, July 20, at 7:30 p.m., a double bill program of one-act operas will be performed in the historic ballroom of the Admiral Nimitz Museum on Main Street. Saturday will include a screening of the PBS 25th anniversary special of “Phantom of the Opera” at the Stagecoach Theater at 9:30 a.m. At 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, at the museum, a workshop titled “What in the World is Happening in the World of Opera?” will be presented, and on Saturday evening a dinner and production “The Best of Broadway” will unfold in the ballroom of the Admiral Nimitz Museum starting with a wine reception at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.FredericksburgTheater.org.

124th Annual Gillespie County Fair in August

The 124th Annual Gillespie County Fair will run in Fredericksburg from Thursday, August 23 through Sunday, August 26. One of the highlights each year is the Fair Parade which rolls down Main Street at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 24 to the delight of thousands. At the Fair Grounds on Highway 16 South, agricultural exhibits, a carnival, arts and crafts, antique tractor shows, nightly dances and horse racing are all part of the family fun! Quilters Take Note

The Vereins Quilt Guild of Fredericksburg will present their 7th Biennial Quilt Show on Labor Day weekend – August 31 through September 2 – at the Farm Bureau building, located at 237 Equestrian Drive off of Highway 87 South. Lady Bird Johnson Golf Course Update

Work continues on the major $2 million upgrade at Fredericksburg’s Lady Bird Johnson Golf Course, redesigned by Jeff Blume. Fairways have been re-contoured and an updated irrigation system has been installed. There are now 48 challenging bunkers, and water comes into play on 10 holes. Industry standard 419 Bermuda grass has been planted on the fairways, while Champion Ultra Dwarf will cover the greens. The reopening is on schedule for September, but also is dependent on the growth of the grass on the fairways and greens. For more information, call the golf course at (830)997-4010.

Vaudeville Opens in Fredericksburg

A new retail store featuring home furnishings and treasures from around the world has opened at 230 East Main Street. As self-proclaimed modern gypsies, the owners of Vaudeville want to bring to their customers the best of what they have encountered throughout their journeys. A French-style bistro offers lunch each day from 11:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. (except Tuesday) in the lower level, as well as a wine cellar. Nicole Davenport has opened a new restaurant called Sugar & Smoke, located at 249 East Main Street in Fredericksburg. The eatery is open for breakfast and lunch.
