1st Annual Women of Wonders Film Fest | March 4-7

The Women of Wonders Film Fest highlights and celebrates the lives and accomplishments of women around the world, and here in Hawai‘i. The film fest presents a selection of films directed by women, about women, for everybody. All the film are FREE and begin at 6:30 pm @ The ARTS at Marks Garage, 1159 Nu‘uanu Avenue. March 4 | Patsy Mink Ahead of the Majority by Kimberlee Bassford | 6:30 @ The ARTS at Marks Garage

A documentary that follows the remarkable journey of Patsy Mink, an Asian American woman who, battling racism and sexism, redefined American politics.

March 5 | Community Cinema | Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines by Kristy Guevara-Flanagan | 6:30 @ The ARTS at Marks Garage

This film traces the fascinating evolution and legacy of Wonder Woman and looks at how popular representations of powerful women often reflect society’s anxieties about women’s liberation. This is part of Community Cinema presented in collaboration with Hawai‘i Peoples Fund.

March 6 | Las Madres: The Mothers of Plaza De Mayo by Susana Blaustein and Lourdes Portillo | 6:30 @ The ARTS at Marks Garage

As well as giving an understanding of Argentinean history in the ‘70s and ‘80s, Las Madres shows the empowerment of women in a society where women are expected to be silent. Las Madres provides a banner of hope in the international struggle for human rights.

March 7 | Ella es el Matador by Gemma Cubero | 6:30 @ The ARTS at Marks Garage

For Spaniards—and for the world—nothing has expressed their country’s traditionally rigid gender roles more powerfully than the image of the male matador. This film reveals the surprising history of the women who are gender pioneers by necessity, confronting both bull and social code.
