ARTICLE OF THE MONTH

The Avatar as Avatar

By Cheri Isgreen

Manuel Trigo is a modern
master of lightness. From Badajoz in southern Spain, close to the Portuguese border, Manuel studied the works of the French classiial masters, particularly La Gueriniere. Today Manuel practices the French equitation of lightness,
the Equitation Francaise
de legerete. The quest for lightness is Manuels passion.
In September 2011, I attended a clinic given byManuel Trigo in Delta, Colorado. Three themes ran through the clinic, giving incarnation to La Guerinieres Ecole de Cavalerie (Paris,1733)1:
-Lengthen the neckto free the shoulder and allow the back to move.
-Never go against the nature of the horse.
-Honor the horse's sensitivity Manuel believes that the
problems of most horses stem from a rein thatis too short. When the neck is short, the movement is blocked. He instructed every rider to give more rein. The longer the neck, the easier it is for the horse to move. When the neck is relaxed, the horse can
use his top line. As you ride, be aware of the rein length, especially if you are making a coruection. (If you must force anything, it can only be your seat.)

Q&A of the Month

We asked a few questions to Manuel Trigo we thought would be helpful.

Q: There is a presentation score in the Alta Escuela and Doma Vaquera tests. What are you looking for and how can we improve this score?

A: Both Disciplines, Alta Escuela and Doma Vaquera, have a presentation phase which is scored from 0 to 10, being the first "exercise" of any test. Both disciplines have the concern to perpetuate the traditional tacks and attire. What the judge is expecting to see is the proper tack and attire, clean in a good shape, worn correctly in the proper positions etc... It also taken in consideration how clean and shiny the horse is, how well the braids or knots are done etc.. However it doesn't take in consideration if the horse did stay still around the judge or if the rider did backup correctly to go back in line with the other riders.
In both disciplines riders need to granted of a minimum score of 5 to be authorized to ride their test. If the score is lower than 5, the rider and horse cannot compete in this class.

Q: In the Lightness classes, you mentioned there will be an upgrade. What is that change?

A: Upgrade of the test is the fact we will add a new "exercise", the presentation, which will be scored from 0 to 10 and will be added to the total of the scores on the second page of each test. The difference of the presentation score in Lightness versus Alta Escuela or Doma Vaquera is that in the Lightness classes the presentation score, if below 5, will not be a disqualification.

MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Name: Julia Anderson

I love horses… In grade school, my favorite dress to wear to school was the one that had ties in the back for a bow. My favorite girl friends were the ones that would play “horses” with me. We would take turns using the dress ties as reins and practice our walk, trot, and serpentines with flying lead changes galloping around the playground at recess.
