Learning about the solar system brings together teachers, students, and North American volunteers.

Summer in Hamisi, Kenya

A Joyful Welcome!

A team of 12 North Americans, including five young adults, traveled to Hamisi in early July. The children of CSI welcomed their visitors with a special program of traditional, sacred, and original dances, and songs in brilliant harmony. A child wrote, “My tears of joy rolled down!” She spoke for everyone!

Mutual learning and curiosity prevailed during the 11-day visit; volunteers, students, and teachers gathered to learn and talk about microscopes, the solar system, North American seasons, music, painting, writing, new games, and supporting one another.

Some student quotes:

“With the visitors we played football, asked questions, learned to pronounce words, taught them Swahili, and benefitted in how to be grateful when you have been given something. I will put these into practice--practice makes perfect.”

“I learned to use a microscope and will take care of our microscopes and teach other children to use them to see animals you cannot see with the naked eye.”

“I thanked the visitors for their time spent and their teachings and their advice. They gave me hope that one day I will care and help the orphans the way they do. Surely I learnt that good people still exist in this world.”

Teachers are the key!

The July volunteers arrived in Kenya during a public school teachers’ strike. While our CSI students thrived in their classrooms, idle children from the public schools longed to be in class, too. A good education is so important. We must keep our excellent teachers, and do our part for children who are so eager to learn.

Sponsor a Child

Twos2

We can't do it without you.

Please consider sponsoring a child or gathering a group of friends or family to share a sponsorship. Your donation covers food, uniforms, health, and teaching. Our goal is to find sponsors for all of the children by December 1, for the 2014 school year. Tax deductible donation: $600/year for primary child at CSI, $700 for CSI graduate in secondary school. Heartfelt thanks to all of our current sponsors!

Solar Power at CSI

This practical, dependable, cost-effective dream will soon be a reality! Solar panels on the new dorm roof and above the kitchen are soaking up sun, ready for power hookup for electricity to the dorm, and water to classroom buildings and kitchen.

Poultry & Fish Project

Eggs continue to be sold and cooked as nourishment for the children, but the hens are aging. Hens will be sold and 300 new chicks purchased to continue the cycle. As for the fish pond, Nile Perch and Tilapia (1000 fingerlings) grow in the government-dug pond near the student garden. Funds are needed for fish food.

Student Garden Club

Students prepare the soil; water spinach, onions, and carrots; and learn about plant care when “the rains disappoint” and when rain is abundant. We overheard one child say with pride, “I joined the club to grow food for our school.” The children send greetings to partners at Parkdale School Garden Club, East Aurora, NY.

Water Filters

filters2

Thanks to fund-raising by Western New York volunteer Elena Delgado, our July team helped distribute Sawyer filters to another 130 school families, with training provided by Kenyan experts. Parents and guardians each paid 200 shillings (to be used for classroom furniture) and then the dancing and singing began! Everyone joined in!

Health Check

glasses and bird pictures2

Using a donated chart, the school nurse, Nelly, teamed with two North American nurses to test the eyes of all 367 CSI students. Teachers now know of children with impairments who might benefit from sitting at the front of the class. Two students were taken to Sabatia Eye Clinic and fitted with glasses. A new world opened up for them!
