A Must Listen

Math teacher Pemberton Heath '08 delivered an incredible Wednesday Night Chapel talk this week that cut right to the core of a value system we hold dear.

"So many of us could relate to her message," said Emily Troisi '13. "She helped us remember that awards and accolades are nice, but that they ultimately do not define us and that the focused pursuit of those external measures can lead to us lose ourselves in the process. It was amazing."

You can listen and download her talk here.

Survivor Episode 2

Two more students were voted off the island this week in Survivor: St. Andrew's. Students had to find blindfolds perched in trees, put them on, and then be directed by teammates to find pieces to build towers. The team with the highest tower won fame and glory. The loser faced the tribal council. The second episode produced by Daniel Maguire '13 is below.

In the Classroom — Living History with Nan Mein

Legendary teacher Nan Mein was the first female teacher at St. Andrew's and was a driving force behind co-education at the School. She is spending parts of the spring being interviewed by wide-eyed VI Formers in Emily Pressman and Wilson Everhart's tutorial. Among some of the treasures she shared last night was the strength of the first girls on campus ("They were pioneers.") and the determination of then-Headmaster Robert Moss to make co-education work.

2013 Griffin Dedicated to Wilson Everhart

Wilson Everhart thought he was asked on staged during School Meeting to help introduce another teacher, but the Editors of the Griffin, the School's yearbook, had other plans. They dedicated the 2013 Griffin to Wilson whose humility in receiving the honor spoke volumes of why they chose him. The audio isn't the best, but you can watch the short ceremony by clicking the picture on the right.

Dorm Life — Learning to Balance Technology

Baum corridor parent Mary Kelly gave up her smartphone last week. "I have come to realize that my iPhone actually makes me less productive, and a lot more distracted, so I want to see what it's like not to have one for awhile," she says. On Monday she shared a Slate.com article about the effects multitasking can have on your brain with the boys on corridor. She then invited them to a conversation about the article held in her living room last night.

The students shared strategies for keeping technology at bay during study hall and on the weekends. Mary continued: "My favorite insight came from one junior who said, 'I liked this article. After I read it, for the past few nights, instead of having nba.com open while I'm writing my English paper, now I have just focused on my English paper. And I came up with all these good ideas!'" Mary and the boys will continue the conversation in the weeks to come.
