It was back in 1986 when a 16 year old Brant Tilds, trumpeter and jazz fanatic, met one of his idols Dizzy Gillespie in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan. The young Brant would often be hanging out at local jazz clubs in the hope that he might get a chance to play with some of his favourite jazz musicians, and that particular night he got lucky. Not only did he meet one of his heros in Dizzy Gillespie, Brant also played with Dizzy's drummer Ignacio Berroa, largely known as the drummer who invented the 'songo' rhythm.

It was that meeting with Dizzy Gillespie and subsequent conversations with Brant that sparked a relentless pursuit...

It was that meeting with Dizzy Gillespie and subsequent conversations with Brant that sparked a relentless pursuit for gaining a real understanding of what Dizzy had meant about his approach to playing jazz. Dizzy told Brant that, 'the feel in jazz, that swing feeling really comes from the güiro (a percussion instrument) used in Cuban music.' Dizzy Gillespie was one of the early innovators of Afro-Cuban jazz (the earliest form of Latin jazz).

That one conversation inspired Brant to go on a whirlwind tour of the world to find, learn and work with some of the world's greatest Latin musicians. Now based in the UK Brant has come here from Detroit by way of Los Angeles and Copenhagen (where some of the best contemporary Cuban music can be heard outside of Cuba).

Listen to track 'Para Luis'

"Green Gold was all about making a classic live album in studio with great players to capture the vibrancy and vitality of the music in the moment, and was inspired by my adventures performing around Europe with Humberto Gomez Vera, author of 'Oro Verde' (Green Gold in English), Luis Alvaro Varona, Ignacio Guerra Acosta, Ernesto Manuitt, and Carlos Gomez." - Brant Tilds

Green Gold is the UK debut album for Brant Tilds and is the culmination of years of dedication, hard work and passion. The album consists of mainly original music from Brant; his compositions sound effortless and move with the fluidity you'll hear in the best afro-cuban jazz.

'Green Gold' features some heavyweight members of the UK latin jazz community. Founder of Valdez, the UK's first salsa band, and hailed as the Godfather of Salsa Music in the UK, Roberto Pla (Joe Strummer, Kate Bush) plays Timbales, Satin Singh (Supergrass) plays congas, multi-talented composer/producer Ray Sandoval plays tres and guitar, with bassist Mark Rose and Brant on trumpet.

As well as Brant's original music, the album features the song 'Oro Verde' by Humberto Gomez Vera, arranger for 15 years of the National Television and Radio Orchestra of Havana. The song was recorded by Cuban television as the theme for the famous soap opera of the same name in the 1970's, with Omara Potundo (Buena Vista Social Club) singing the theme. This version is the first recording of the song ever released for sale.

Brant's ambition is to bring his own style of latin jazz back into the jazz mainstream, like his idol Dizzy Gillespie who originally made the genre popular.
