By Lynn Gastineau
President of Gastineau Log Homes, Inc.

Welcome Family to the "Very Special" October 2012 issue of The Oak Leaf because it is our 35th Anniversary! For new readers, this is a monthly newsletter that is sent by e-mail to those that have expressed an interest in Gastineau Log Homes. We use this as a way of communicating technical, design and industry information. For more information, check out our web site at www.oakloghome.com.

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all our customers over the past 35 years. It has truly been a honor to meet you and be part of your lives. On behalf of everyone at GLH, all I can say is "Thank You!" And that we look forward to another 35 years of providing more beautiful homes and meeting more amazing people.

Rural MO Cover 1985 copy

This was me back in 1985 on my front porch with my dog Duke. He is not with us any longer, but I still own this home and GLH is still making beautiful log homes for awesome people! (Wish I still looked this young...).

Trivia Question: How many businesses are there in the U.S?
A: 4 million B. 10 million C. 20 million D. 30 million (See the answer below.)

GLH In the News... There is a monthly publication put out by the MO Rural Electric Coops called "Rural Missouri." Back in 1985, they featured a story on GLH. (See photo to right.) Well, they are doing a follow up story on us for the November issue. If you live in MO and have an account with an electric coop, look for us in the November issue!!

We have come a long way! To look back, I went through our drawers of old fashioned "print" photographs that I thought you might enjoy seeing. At the right is our first model home which is still our office. This 1900 square foot Missourian Loft B has been added onto until it is now 10,000 square feet. If you would like to see what it looks like now, click here.

This is a modified Monticello built in the late 80's. It has a three car attached garage and trap windows in the gable. The walk out basement has log siding on the exterior.

5.Ext.Cooper

Does this home look familiar?: This was the house on the cover of "Log Homes Made Easy" by Jim Cooper. If you read Log Home Living magazine, Jim has a column in most issues. Jim was a dealer for us for many years before he became a world famous author! All of the photographs in the book were of our homes that Jim had sold and built.

1.ext.LakeM

This custom home was built overlooking Lake Michigan back in the late 80's. It was considered to be a very "modern" design for a log home back then!

3.Int.MD

Log homes do not have to have wood ceilings and walls everywhere! This home was built in a subdivision in Maryland and blended into the neighborhood very well. A log home is what you make it!

How tall can you make your log walls? People often ask us if we can make the log walls for the first floor taller than our standard 8'9." The answer is yes, you can make the walls as tall as you wish. Here is a photo of a home showing how it looks with about 4 extra rows. You may want taller walls just so your ceiling is higher. Or you may need a higher ceiling because you are 7' tall like one of our home owners!

Quote of the Month: "If you go to work on your goals, your goals will go to work on you. If you go to work on your plan, your plan will go to work on you. Whatever good things we build end up building us." - Jim Rohn

10.Japan copy copy

This is a photo of a job site in Japan from 1987. Mike Branch from GLH spent six weeks there teaching them how to build log homes. This was before the screws we use now, back when we used sledge hammers and spikes. It is much easier today! (PS: GLH was the first log home company to switch to Oly-Screws for our log walls.)
