January 2012

From the Message, Micah 6:8 - "But he's already made it plain how to live, what to do, what God is looking for in men and women. It's quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love, and don't take yourself too seriously— take God seriously."

From Today’s New International Version, Luke 1:38 – “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me according to your word.”

Happy New Year, my friends!

I pray this email finds you all well and ready to head into another year full-force for Jesus! I know that this is a time for renewal for many people. It’s a chance for a new start. It’s an opportunity to try something new, bring back something old, forgive and forget, and move on.

Regardless of whether you are a resolution maker or not, I pray that you will see the joy in serving God in a new way this year. I pray that you have the opportunity of seeing the joy in the face of one of our students as he or she talks about the fun they had in the dorms, the late night conversations, the challenging professors (that look may not quite be joy) and the mission trip that changed the way they see the world.

I pray that you are changed as you dive deeper into God’s Word this year. I pray that a new translation or new Bible study or new pastor (or perhaps even one of our own classes here at SC that you may choose to audit) will show you something new about how much God loves you and wants you to serve in so many ways.

This is my prayer for each of you, friends. This is my prayer for each person on this campus. It is certainly my prayer for me. I hope to commit both of the above passages to heart, not just memory, this year. I give you the right to quiz me when you see me, but that means I get the opportunity to quiz you, too.

Happy New Year!

Donate monthly to SC through electronic funds transfer

You may have recently received a call from our annual telefund students who assist us in raising money for student scholarships. In case you missed that call or would like to contribute to the mighty works that God is doing through SC, here is one giving option that is easy and always enables you to reach your giving goal to the College.

Giving monthly through an electronic funds transfer allows you to build Sterling College into your monthly giving – an amount that works for you. It’s amazing how giving monthly allows you to give more than you thought you could. Over 12 months, $25 per month totals $300, $50 per month totals $600, $83.33 per month totals $1,000 enabling membership in the Cooper Society. Writing one check for the total amount does not always seem possible for us. Plus it

Saves time writing monthly checks.
Saves postage.
Saves check charges.
Increases security.

It is also more helpful to Sterling:
* Speeds your gift to Sterling so the funds are immediately put to use.
* Reduces the overhead of mailing, receipting and processing each gift by $5.00. The money saved will be used to increase the support of Sterling.
* Enables the College to predict the amount of annual support more accurately.

A simple and convenient way to partner monthly with Sterling College in the mission to develop creative and thoughtful leaders who understand a maturing Christian faith.

For more information, contact Advancement Assistant Deanna Henning at 1-800-346-1017 ext 219 or email at dhenning@sterling.edu.

The Alumni Directory project is underway!

We haven’t had an alumni directory since 2005. These are time-consuming to do and impossible for Sterling Alumni Office of one, plus a part-time student assistant to do. Additionally, they are not inexpensive to print. The Alumni Office does not have the budget to do such a project, so we try to do one every 5-10 years.

You should have received either a postcard or email by now from Publishing Concepts (PCI). We decided to utilize the services of this company to provide you with an up-to-date, quality product that we would have been unable to do by ourselves. There are three options in purchasing if you are interested in owning a copy of the new directory. You can purchase the actual book, the CD-ROM (which is everything that the book is only in digital format) or both the book, the CD-ROM and a companion air ticket. You are not required to purchase anything but we do hope that you will take a few minutes to call in and update your information for us.

Sterling College forfeited the percentage that is generally charged to alumni on behalf of the school so as to give you the best deal possible. We understand that this book is more expensive than previously offered directories. We hope that you understand that in order to provide you with a timely and quality product, we needed to utilize the services of an outside company which assists us in updating all of our records, does the marketing, printing and mailing on our behalf.

Blog? Discount? What?

Do you have a blog? Many people start this online journal only to let it decline and sit there for a couple of years, gathering internet dust. Sterling College has a blog – We Are Sterling – that is doing anything BUT collecting dust. It’s a fun way for you to stay connected with the student pulse of the campus. While it is really targeting future students, you might enjoy seeing what our students are up to each semester. You can also pass this link along to any student you think would make an excellent fit here at SC (hint, hint).

Did you know that for every student that turns in a legitimate application to Sterling College with YOUR name in the referral box – YOU receive a 25% off coupon to the SC bookstore? EVERY TIME. While you cannot combine more than once discount to receive anything free, you can stock up on all sorts of SC treasures! Check out the Bookstore here to see what you want to get with that first referral!
