Flu Vaccine is Here!

Chestnut Ridge Pediatrics has received our supply of 2012-2013 flu vaccine. As per CDC guidelines, everyone who is at least 6 months of age should get a flu vaccine this season. It’s especially important for some people to get vaccinated, including those with asthma, diabetes, and chronic lung disease. The flu vaccine is safe and effective. Patients over six months of age can receive injectable flu vaccine (a shot), and most patients over two years of age can receive FluMist (nasal spray). Please call the office to schedule your child's flu vaccine.

Parents and Grandparents: Get vaccinated to protect the kids!

You know that Chestnut Ridge Pediatrics feels childhood vaccines are essential to keeping your children healthy. But did you know that you, your spouse, parents and babysitters need to be up-to-date on vaccines to keep you and your children free from vaccine-preventable diseases? Many adults mistakenly believe that vaccinations are only necessary for children. This is untrue. Some vaccines are new and were not available when you were children. In addition, the immunity to some of the vaccines you received in childhood has waned and you need a “booster”. Unimmunized adults can be a source of infection for children, especially infants who are most vulnerable. If there are young children in your household it is essential that all adults who spend time with the children get these vaccines:

Diptheria-pertussis-tetanus (Tdap): this vaccine is recommended for all individuals 11 years and older. In New Jersey it is required for entry into 6th grade. We are seeing a resurgence of pertussis (whooping cough) in our area. In older children and adults, whooping cough is mainly a nuisance. It is called the “100 day cough” because it takes an average of three months for the persistent cough to go away. However, whooping cough can be deadly for infants, and studies show that infants often get infected with pertussis from their adult caregivers.
Influenza (“flu”): Flu vaccine is recommended for all adults who have children under the age of five years old in the household. Children under five are more likely to develop serious complications from the flu. It is especially important for pregnant mothers and parents of newborns to receive flu vaccine. Infants under the age of six months can’t receive flu vaccine (because it isn’t effective in this age group). The process of vaccinating everyone in the household of a young infant is called “cocooning” – protecting the baby by protecting the older children and adults in the household. Flu vaccine must be given annually in the fall.
Varicella vaccine (chickenpox): any adult who isn’t sure if they had chickenpox as a child, should receive two doses of the varicella vaccine (given a month apart). Chickenpox is much more severe in adults than it is in children. Also, susceptible adults can give chickenpox to their young infants.
Shingles vaccine (Zostrix): adults 60 year and older should receive one dose of this vaccine. Receiving this vaccine decreases the likelihood of getting shingles by over 50%. Not only is shingles a painful condition, but also young infants can develop chickenpox after exposure to an adult with shingles.

All of these vaccines should be available from your primary care doctor, an urgent care center, or even many pharmacies. CRPA will administer flu vaccine and Tdap vaccine to parents/grandparents/nannies; please contact our office for vaccine pricing information for adults.

Chestnut Ridge Pediatrics recommends The Valley Hospital Pediatric Emergency Room in Ridgewood, New Jersey for our patients who need after-hours emergency care. Children can become ill or injured at all hours of the day and Valley Hospital's Pediatric Emergency Room provides specialized pediatric care 24 hours a day. If you are considering taking your child to the emergency room, you may call our office anytime, day or night, for advice as to whether a visit to the ER is necessary. Secondary Insurance Submissions

As of July 1, 2012, Chestnut Ridge Pediatrics, an affiliate of BCD Health Partners, will no longer be submitting claims to secondary insurances. We will be happy to provide you with a time-of-service receipt that you can send with the explanation of benefits from your primary insurer to your secondary insurance company and they will reimburse you directly.

Chestnut Ridge Pediatrics is now part of a larger organization, BCD Health Partners, LLC. The doctors at CRPA decided to come together with other pediatric groups in order to maintain the highest quality pediatric practice in today's labile health insurance environment. Our name and location remain the same and you can expect the same great care from the physicians and providers you already see.

BCD Health Partners' central billing office is located in Saddle Brook, NJ. If you have questions about a bill or your insurance, please call 201-252-8700 (Rose and Georgine are still part of our team and will get your questions answered!).
