ELVA June Newsletter

Well it is summer at last, the sun has been shining, the race season has started in earnest and ELVA cars are appearing at various circuits around the planet.

Pleased to have spent time with visitors to the UK including Paul Adams, Ray Hoeper and daughter Sidney, plus Alan Patterson and colleague Danny Yanda. Alan is a unique ELVA owner in that he still owns, and races, the '59 Formula Junior (100/21) that he ordered new from Frank Nichols during a lively encounter at Sebring all those years ago. He is currently building up a collection of the cars he has raced at Sebring for Frank Nichols, and would like to find an ELVA Mk.II s/r. The chassis number on his Mk.I is 100/6; Mk.III is 100/35; Mk.IV is 100/87 and the Formula Jr is 100/21. I will ask Alan to share his Elva stories many of which will be highly amusing!

Russ Mowry is another long term Elva owner, this time a Courier. He is to recreate an 8000 mile round trip soon in support of the "Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund" and Russ really deserves contributions, large or small, in recognition of his efforts.

Leaving the 13th July and driving the Courier 100/69/R to CA and onwards to Watkins Glen, the route takes in Toronto, Sault Ste Marie, Ludington, Road America, Sturgis, Redwood City, Monterey, racing the car wherever the opportunity exists. Then trailer back to Put-in-Bay, Ohio and on to the Historics meeting at Lime Rock in CT, and on to Watkins Glen for the Vintage GP before heading home! Russ did this 50 years ago, same driver, same car, same route!

An amazing undertaking so dip into your pockets and promise some sponsorship for a very important charity.

There were awards too, Group 3A winner was Byron, while Mike picked up second place plus another trophy for 'Presentation and Performance' in Race Group 11.

Some good outings in the UK too. Rod Begbie in his very pretty Mk.IV, and at the Brands Hatch HSCC meeting was the Courier of Amanda Hadfield and a McLaren-Elva M1A of John Bladon. The Formula Junior meetings are always very well supported and lots of interesting and helpful info as always at http://www.formulajunior.com

The response to the proposed celebration of the stunning Elva-Porsche win at Elkhart Lake in 1963 as been rather muted, perhaps a sign of the times. Disappointing, but not a total surprise as the few cars built are scattered far and wide, some cars yet to be located. The original idea has proved to be logistically difficult however I feel sure that the 50th anniversary will be celebrated at the circuit during the 6-8th ELVF meeting. A new exciting race series for the small-bore sports racers and early Couriers is taking shape. However it needs more owners to express an interest in the new FLIERS races.

Rod Begbie (Elva Mk IV) was very much an instigator of this series and David Whitehouse (Mk 1 Rochdale body) will hopefully get involved. Note that Pre 1960 Couriers in close to original spec are eligible for the current 50s Historic Inter-Marque races.

PDF of an article that appeared in Autosport of a test of a number of eligible cars which included Mandy Hadfield’s Courier. Further info from John Turner johnturn@btinternet.com
