Important update to the Elva event at Watkins Glen

A reminder that the IMRRC is to Celebrate Elva - all Elva cars are invited to participate at this special occasion when Award winning author Janos Wimpffen will be the keynote speaker at the International Motor Racing Research Centre at Watkins Glen on April 21-22 for a program celebrating the Elva race car.

Wimpffen will be available to sign copies of his new book ELVA: The Car, The People, The History (David Bull Publishing), and winner of the Motor Press Guild's Dean Batchelor award for the best book of 2011. The weekend is WGI's traditional Opening Weekend where thousands of area enthusiasts come to the Glen to drive their cars on the 3.4 mile circuit. Laps are at controlled speed behind a pace car and proceeds go to a local charity.

Participants registered for the Elva display will have the track to themselves during a dedicated period midday to drive exhibition laps at controlled speeds. There is no charge for Elva participants for their laps during this defined period.

Elva owners wishing to participate should contact Research Centre administrator Max Neal at 607/535-9044 or email max@racingarchives.org to register to be part of this unique event. Obviously many will need to consider a long journey but the indications are that this will be a 'MUST DO' event which will further recognise ELVA as a leading and flourishing marque thanks to all the input by the talented team of people who designed and built the cars, together with all the owners and enthusiasts who have passionately kept the cars in action over the past fifty or more years.

Do please make a special effort to attend this event, particularly those owners with Elva Sports Racers and other Elva cars with significant racing histories. Be seen to be part of this celebration of the cars, and learn more about the Elva story.

I hope that you found time to read the story of a family who owned various examples of the Trojan built Courier Mk.IV which never really received the recognition it deserved, but obviously one family was mighty impressed!! Go to www.elva.com/history/201202-dragact.php.

Thinking of "books", I have been keeping in touch with David Bull Publishing with regard to the promised PE (signed) version of the Elva book and this remains a priority but of course it takes time to organise the signatures and extra content which makes the book a limited edition, collector's item. I am assured that it is all in hand and that there will be further announcements soon.

Another recently published book that most certainly deserves your attention is "Doctor on the Grid" by Dr. Tony Goodwin, with a Forward by Bruno Senna, published by MRP.

Tony and I compared notes when we were both gathering research material and attempting to put some words together. Tony successfully completed his superb book whereas I was fortunate enough to relinquish the immense amount of time and effort to Janos, allowing a measure of normality to return to my life!

If you enjoy reading about the life and times of a passionate and successful racing driver then buy this book. There is some Elva content and I recall being at Brands Hatch with Frank Nichols mid 1980's when Sir Stirling announced his much publicised return to motorsport in his recently purchased Elva-BMW Mk.VIIS. From memory, Stirling was on pole and took off like a scalded cat with Doc Tony in hot pursuit driving a Merlyn.

There was much jumping and cheering from the small Elva contingent until Tony sneaked past into first place at Druids on the very last lap! Curses! However, he was soon forgiven and this race was just one example of his dedication, determination and huge talent in a racing car.
