Spring is in the Air

March 2014

There are changes afoot for us at Sheepfold. Sue is relocating from Sheffield to Northumberland following her husband who started work in the North East last summer. The move has meant temporary accommodation in a hamlet next to Hadrian’s Wall. This is giving inspiration for a new design which will be appearing shortly … watch this space!

Sue’s new neighbours have some grassland which cannot be ploughed, as below the surface are archaeological remains. In this location there is interest only in Romans, though subsequent eras have also left their mark. However, the grass must be kept trim so the services of a small flock of Jacob and Jacob cross sheep have been pressed into service. Some of the sheep are expecting so Sue can expect new lambs to be added to the flock in another month or so, and may be called on for midwifery services — a new and exciting experience!

Talking of designs, it is very difficult to plan knitted felted items to a precise size. In the last few months a hat design, started a while ago, was dusted off and continued. Much as we love the design, there is still a need for a bit of resizing! Sue remains hopeful of getting the design right sometime soon.

Alice meanwhile has completed the lovely new Beckside cushion design now available in our online shop. It is available in Manx Loaghtan wool which is a toffee brown colour. The cable design was inspired by the recently fast flowing river by Alice’s house, thought the name of Beckside suggests a more meandering path! It can also be seen on display at the recently refurbished Wool Clip shop at Priest’s Mill in Caldbeck, Cumbria. Alice is now a member of The Woolclip Co-operative and can be seen manning the shop regularly.

Our online shop now has some additional breeds available as sliver for spinning, felting and other craft purposes. We will shortly be taking delivery of yarns produced specially for us from the fleeces we collected warm from the sheep last June at a sheep shearing in Cumbria. In particular look out for our aran weight Hebridean and Badgerface Welsh Mountain in two natural shades – Torddu (pale) and Torwen (dark).

Following the success of our greetings cards, and with an expanding library of super sheep photos, our range of cards has expanded. We now have a third pack of four different cards, each of a specific breed, available for £5 plus postage The back of the card details information about the breed, while the inside is blank for your own greeting. This third pack features Bluefaced Leicester, Kerry Hill, Manx Loaghtan and Scottish Blackface.

We are always open to suggestions for designs, though we have yet to design a requested dog coat – this is a bit too close to “a wolf in sheep’s clothing” perhaps? Please get in touch if you would like us to work on something in particular. A current activity is designing a kit for egg cosies following a fun discussion on Facebook! Watch this space. And a fantastic new crochet bag design is on its way too.

Coming up soon is Wonderwool Wales in mid-Wales on 26–27 April. This has become a regular fixture in our diary when we look forward to sharing our new designs and yarns with you all. It is also great to meet up with old friends and new. We hope to see you there – do come and say hello to us. We will be on stand E4, though a small amount will also be on the Wool Clip stand too.

We hope you have all survived the past three horrendously wet and windy months. For once, those of you in the south have had a far worse time than us Northerners and our thoughts have been very much with you all especially any with livestock. Mind you, Alice’s hens have been well and truly sulking with only two of them being bothered to lay eggs at the moment. Roll on some warmer, drier weather!
