In 2013 TKV Desikachar, one of the most illustrious yogis of our age, will be seventy five. This humble master, affectionately known to his students as Sir, who first entered the yoga scene at the beginning of the 1960s, is one of the greatest contributors to contemporary yoga. He has touched the hearts of millions of practitioners around the planet through his simplicity and clarity.

Totally devoted to spreading the teachings of his father, T Krishnamacharya, he has travelled the world and demonsrated through his own example that care is a indispensable aspect in developing harmony in body, mind and spirit through yoga practice.

While his book, the Heart of Yoga, has guided many yoga teachers through their training, few realise that it was he who pioneered the use of line drawings as a shorthand for referring to asana. Again, it is largely due to his influence that the use of modifications in asana practice is now accepted and widespread. He also introduced and developed the use of chanting in practice as a tool to promote harmony in the three areas of body, mind and spirit. Even more importantly, it was he who showed brilliantly how the Yoga Sutras could be taught and integrated fully into yoga practice and study, and how they are as relevant to us today as they were thousands of years ago. His own translation and commentary of that seminal text are a wonderful example of how it is possible to be faithful to the original, yet clear and simple in presenting it to a modern audience.

Over and above these achievements, his unfailing energy for almost fifty years of day to day work dealing with patients with health problems have made him an authority on the use of yoga practice for therapeutic purposes. He has demonstrated the power and potential of yoga to heal and even aid in a person’s spiritual development.

Since he set up the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram (KYM) in Chennai thirty six years ago as an offering to his renowned father, thousands and thousands have been through those doors and benefited from the teaching they have received. KYM provides a home for important ongoing research projects in yoga’s application and for yoga therapy to be taught systematically to people around the world so they too can help others. Along with his son Kausthub Desikachar, he started in 2006 the Krishnamacharya Healing & Yoga Foundation as the umbrella organization networking all Yoga Teachers, Yoga Teacher Trainers and Yoga Therapists officially practicing in the tradition of Yogacarya T Krishnamacharya. This has brought both credibility and integrity to the living tradition of the grand master.

We heartily invite you to come and join some of his most senior and longstanding students from around the world, as they commemorate, celebrate and share the essence of TKV Desikachar’s teachings on yoga. This special celebration includes lecture presentations, asana and pranayama practices, chanting sessions, as well as special evening meditative practices as an offering to his continued service to the yoga community, and will be conducted in English and French.

The main faculty, all of whom are long term students of TKV Desikachar, are listed below. Apart from these teachers, several others, who studied with him for many years, will be invited as special guests on this very auspicious occasion.

We expect the conference to be completely full, and hence suggest that you register early to secure your spot. Please note that there will be No Refunds if you cancel your participation.
