Sherri Says....

It’s been a busy quarter for BAG IT! Our national ESCAPE Leadership Conference for Cancer Advocates was a great success, and the community has surprised us with some amazing support through the eegee Coin Collection and Welcome Wagon of Tucson Northeast Club. It doesn’t stop there! Green Valley will hold their annual Mah Jongg Tournament with proceeds going to BAG IT on Nov. 3! And of course, we are gearing up with our presenting sponsor Arizona Oncology and supporter Summit Hut to bring you the 9th (yes, 9th!) Annual Take a Hike for BAG IT event November 18. Don’t miss our new Cancer Care Tip section and our new blog registration!

The weather was absolutely perfect as more than 100 golfers recently teed up at the Dell Urich Golf Course for the Jacobs Tucson Open. The Jacobs Engineering Employee Club wanted to sponsor a golf tournament with all proceeds benefitting a local cancer non-profit organization. We were thrilled when we got the call that they selected BAG IT!

Next, Jacobs organizer extraordinaire, Marcos Gomez, and his dedicated team of Jacobs volunteers went to work enlisting Jacobs employees, vendors, clients, and friends to play, sponsor the event, and donate raffle prizes. They orchestrated the tournament beautifully and proudly handed BAG IT a check for $6992.80, which will help to provide BAG IT bags for approximately 225 people newly diagnosed with cancer, and their families.

KUDOS to Marcos, Bernie, Marisol, Kelly, and the entire gang at JACOBS ENGINEERING for your support of BAG IT!

Escape

BAG IT’s commitment to patient education has expanded its outreach around the country. Thanks to the generous funding and in-kind support of Eisai, Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Genentech, Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. and Miraval, BAG IT held its 2nd annual national leadership conference for cancer advocates, ESCAPE, last August.

Through an application process, we carefully selected 32 community cancer advocates leading cancer-related projects, programs, and organizations around the country. In August we brought them to Tucson for four days to network, and to work with our speakers and facilitators to gain insight, tools, and skills to sustain and grow their cancer advocacy efforts in their local communities. They also had a chance to renew themselves and learn techniques to prevent burnout through the integration and balance of mind, body and spirit at Miraval to enable them to continue their difficult work of cancer advocacy.

Through this national conference, BAG IT now supports potentially thousands of cancer survivors across the country to continue to receive improved services and support through the passionate advocates who attended ESCAPE. Overall feedback was extremely positive, and the participants’ comments tell it all:

EscapeGroup

"Thank you! I am extremely grateful for your support. Escape has provided more tools, contacts, an entire national network of supporters and advocates with which to connect and draw strength. The leadership team has provided experts in many crucial areas that will enable us to refocus our skills to better serve our clients in the community." -ESCAPE participant

Treatment Options for Cancer Continue to Increase

It seems that research and development of the treatment of cancer continues to pay off. The rate of new drug approvals for the treatment of cancer has continued at a rapid pace: In the last three months alone, 6 new anticancer agents have been approved for the treatment of a variety of cancers and one drug has received approval for a new indication.

These approvals include carfilzomib (Kyprolis®) for the treatment of multiple myeloma; Ziv-aflibercept (ZALTRAP®) for the treatment of advanced colon cancer; vincristine liposome (Marqibo®) for the treatment of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia; enzalutamide (Xtandi®) for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer; bosutinib (Bosulif®) for chronic myelogenous leukemia, and regorafenib (Stivarga®) for the treatment of advanced colon cancer. Everolimus (Afinitor®), a drug previously approved for kidney cancer, received a new approval for use in some advanced breast cancers.

Four of the seven drugs noted above are in pill form. Each drug is approved for specific situations and sometimes for use in specific drug combinations and thus not appropriate for all patients with those cancers for which they are approved. This impressive rate of new cancer drug approvals may continue, as research has allowed a better understanding of how many cancers grow and how to develop drugs to stop that growth.
