In August 14, around 20 people enjoyed a breakfast meeting and presentation by Judy McKay, who outlined the findings from her Honours thesis in Human Resource Management. Judy’s thesis was titled “Retention and Recruitment in the Limestone Coast.
Judy's study concluded that many forces impact on recruitment and retention in regional areas.
• Workforce shortages, skill shortages, ageing workforce, tightening labour market and regional migration out of young people resulting in capacity shortfalls
• Employees perspective, the fit, links and sacrifice of the employee to both the organisation and local community
• Cultural fit of the employee to the organisation, their attitudes and personality to ensure attracting the right candidates
• Stages of life cycle, tailoring what incentives and work life flexibility employees require at certain stages to retain them
• Pull factors , what attracts, and Push factors which repel employees
Judy has subsequently met with Mount Gambier City Council staff to present her findings and learn about the work they are currently undertaking in this area.
