March 2014

Important Announcement

Martin Yates will be undergoing surgery shortly. As a result, he will be on a medical leave of absence from his duties as President of the ABCA, effective immediately. In the interim, Vice President Brian Saunders will ensure the business of the ABCA continues to run smoothly. Brian can be reached at (613) 273-3198 or at SaundersJamesBrian@gmail.com.

We wish you a speedy recovery, Martin.

The ABCA has lost two long-time members and Directors. Treasurer Betty Ann Gillespie and Facilities and Maintenance manager, Garnet Gray, tendered their resignations at the last board meeting on February 16. Betty Ann and Garnie contributed greatly to the Althorpe Bolingbroke community over the years, and we are sorry to see them go.

Thank you, and farewell, Betty Ann and Garnet. You will be missed.

Mark Your Calendars

Pat Hough and Freda Russell have been busy organizing another great line-up of special events for 2014.

Two new initiatives we're pretty excited about: a Slice of Life show-and-tell series that will kick off on May 23 with a presentation by our own Wendy Briggs-Jude about Nature In Our Area, and a Victorian Tea, complete with harpist, on Sunday, June 8.

Many favourites will also be repeated. Among them: in June, a cheese fundraiser, and dinner dance; the fish fry in July; a contra dance in August. Details will be announced as confirmed.

We hope you can join us for these fun and entertaining events. They're a great way to meet and mingle with your friends and neighbours while raising funds for the ABCA.

If you can help out in any small way, that would be much appreciated, too!

200th Anniversary Celebrations

In 2016, our area will celebrate a milestone anniversary of settlement – 200 years!

The townships and municipalities have joined forces to create a memorable celebration. A variety of activities and events are being organized (leading up to and during 2016) to honour our forebears, pay tribute to the First Nations, and commemorate the military settlement history of the area.

South Sherbrooke is among the original municipalities that will be highlighted.

We think the ABC Hall would be an ideal spot to host an event that recognizes our early settlers and acknowledges the historical significance of the Althorpe Bolingbroke community.

If you have any ideas for a theme or event to celebrate this 200th Anniversary, we’d love to hear from you. Drop me a line at jude@rideau.net. Thanks.

Regular Events Update

The Bolingbroke Café, held on the first Friday of the month, will continue through June as will the Musicians Circle on Thursday evenings. Neither of these events will take place in July or August.

The Saturday night Potluck Music Jams, however, have been cancelled.

Spring Is Almost Here

I think we all agree it's been a (way too) long and cold winter. Happily, the Spring Equinox is only 3 weeks away, and Daylight Savings Time resumes on March 9. So, there is light at the end of the tunnel - literally.

Until then, keep well, and warm!
