Art Brussels has built up its reputation over the years and now occupies a position among the top five international art fairs. The Third Line is participating at the fair alongside a hundred and ninety leading international galleries.

The three artists selected investigate the formal and aesthetic characteristics of geometry, presented across multiple disciplines. Reducing representation to its most basic components such as lines, angles and shapes, and interpreting them through various media, each artist shares their own unique understanding and vision of the fundamentals of geometry.

Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian incorporates traditional Iranian reverse glass painting, mirror mosaics and principles of Islamic Geometry with a modern sensibility. Through wall based panels and free standing works, she presents both a detailed craft and contemporary abstraction that employs an interaction of surface texture, light and reflection, colour and form. In Monir’s work, the intricate craftwork moves beyond a mere exercise and explores interpretations in contemporary thought.

The works of Sahand Hesamiyan are primarily interactive and are clearly derived from the principles of Islamic architecture. Linking science and geometry to the metaphysical nature of sufi spirituality, Sahand references the construction philosophy of ancient Persian structural forms such as the dome, wherein the height and upward movement of the structure is a metaphor for the heavenly transcendence man reaches with enlightenment.

Sherin Guirguis’ work investigates the politics of ornamentation, engaging both formal and social concerns by juxtaposing the reductive Western language of minimalist aesthetics with that of Eastern Arabic ornamentation. Sherin examines post-colonial themes of political, cultural and social dogma and feminist activism within the framework of the Egyptian diaspora, both in the public and private spheres. By continuing her previous practice of hand cut works on paper, embedded with gold powder and gold leafing, Sherin uses architectural references such as doorways, windows, and arches to convey the significance of the site and the role it plays in establishing a radical ideology.
