Dutch-New Zealand Ronnie van Hout at The Dowse

Ronnie Robot

"I've See Things" is at The Dowse Art Museum until 11 November 2012
45 Laings Road, Lower Hutt, New Zealand

Melbourne-based New Zealand artist Ronnie van Hout is known for creating endless, intriguing versions of himself in his exhibitions and in I’ve Seen Things he takes on the role of cult leader, inserting himself into the larger story of Canterbury religious cult, The Full Gospel Mission. The exhibition also coincides with the unveiling, just in front of The Dowse, of another crazy Ronnie creation: Fallen Robot which is a public sculpture that lies in a shallow pool in Lower Hutt’s new Civic Square.

Cross cultural unity through partnerships grants

Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship Nicholas Kotsiras has announced 12 grants worth $480,000 to Victoria’s Multicultural community organisations.
The Victorian Coalition Government’s Unity Through Partnerships grants program is an initiative designed to support major multicultural festivals and events in Victoria and to foster cross-cultural connections that encourage involvement of the whole community in celebrating cultural diversity.
“We believe that greater unity is achieved through the sharing of our differences and by learning about each other through celebrations that involve partnerships between two or more multicultural communities,” Mr Kotsiras said. "The funded projects enable organisations to cultivate partnerships with other culturally diverse communities with the intention of encouraging cultural exchange and collaboration".
“Music, dance, food and art fashion a resilient bridge upon which communities can meet and exchange cultures and thus foster greater understanding about each other’s uniqueness and similarities” Mr Kotsiras said. “Artistic and cultural exchange is not new, it is an ancient and established method of creating greater understanding and also in generating something new and exciting”.
The Unity Through Partnerships grants program provides funding of up to $100,000 for multicultural festivals and events in Melbourne and regional Victoria. Some of the highlights of the Unity Through Partnerships program include the Piers Festival held at Station and Princess Pier in South Melbourne, Pakofest in Geelong and a Diwali Festival at Federation Square.
Through this program the Victorian Coalition Government has increased overall funding to Victoria’s multicultural communities by $1.1 million per annum, demonstrating its commitment to building a resilient, vibrant and cohesive multicultural society.

Were you snapped as a migrant?

Post-war migrants who were snapped by government photographers when they arrived in Australia (or before they left their homeland) feature on a new website created by the National Archives.
The website Destination:Australia – sharing our post-war migrant stories contains more than 20,000 photographs of migrants from various countries who arrived at different ports around the country after World War II. They extend up until the 1990s and cover a wide range of activities.
The photographs include arrivals, citizenship ceremonies, festivals, migrant centres and new places of worship. There are also thousands of photographs of migrants in the workforce or participating in other aspects of community life.
The National Archives of Australia hopes those who featured in the photos (or friends and family who knew them) will be able to fill in the details about unidentified people and places. Visitors to the site can search using family names, places of origin, migrant hostels, ports of arrival or other terms which may identify a group of friends.
“We also hope that other migrants who aren’t featured in the photos will add their own stories of arriving and living in Australia,” said curator Tracey Clarke.
The site hasn’t officially been launched yet but the National Archives is inviting post-war migrants and their families to use the site and share their memories about the photos. If anyone finds themselves or a relative, the National Archives would like them to add their story to the website.
The new site can be viewed at Destination Australia.

digid

GEZOCHT: Informatie betreffende fam.
