Dear PYRN-members,
Welcome to the long-anticipated April-May newsletter. We have a big announcement to make this month. The old PYRN website (http://pyrn.ways.org) has been moved to the arcticportal (http://pyrn.arcticportal.org). We hope you enjoy it and please let us know if there are any questions.
The summer is right around the corner so, for those of you prepping your equipment for the field, remember your bug spray and have a great season!

PYRN @ EUCOP4
The Fourth European Conference on Permafrost (EUCOP4) will be held in Évora, Portugal, in June 2014 (http://www.eucop4.org/). This is the Regional Conference of the International Permafrost Association (IPA) in 2014, a major event for permafrost scientists and engineers, among them of course PYRN members and mentors. We hope that many of you are planning to participate in the conference, because we are already in the process of organizing a bunch of PYRN activities in order to get you - the upcoming generation - connected and established as a fundamental part of the permafrost research community. Among other activities we plan to have a pre-conference workshop for young researchers and have already several things in mind how to make it interesting, productive and a great experience for all participants. However, there is still time to work out the details, so we invite you to share your ideas, wishes, experiences from other workshops with us (contact@pyrn.org). We will keep you informed about PYRN related EUCOP activities in the coming newsletters and on the website.
ADAPT Early Career Researchers Association (AECRA)
AECRA seeks to bring together young researchers by creating a supportive framework to facilitate communication, collaborations and involvement throughout the ADAPT community and beyond.
Mission: Generate a forum allowing early career researchers to share their knowledge, information, skills, expertise and experiences; facilitate collaboration and support among graduate students, postdoctoral and other early career researchers of the ADAPT program; stimulate interdisciplinary research by coordinating and discussing co-operative strategies to achieve top-quality Arctic field work, protocols as well as laboratory and data analyses; promote education and outreach activities; contribute to build northern capacity by engaging northerners and favouring community-based research; cooperate with existing northern student and early career organizations such as APECS and ArcticNet.
Membership: All ADAPT students and postdoctoral fellows shall automatically be members of the ADAPT Early Career Researcher Association. Other ADAPT HQPs are encouraged to be involved in the association, as well as early career researchers outside of ADAPT who share common interests. Northerners involved in ADAPT activities are also welcome.
USPA Early Career Travel Grant Announcement - 2013
The U.S. Permafrost Association will provide travel grants for U.S.-based students and post-graduate researchers (within six years of their terminal degree) to attend conferences, field schools, or pursue field studies directly relevant to permafrost science and engineering in 2013. Successful applicants will receive a minimum of $500, up to a maximum of $2,000. The value of awards will be based on the merit of applications. For conferences, the applicant must be first author on a permafrost-related research presentation. Early Career Travel Grants will not be awarded for the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting; AGU travel grant opportunities will be announced later this year.
Preference will be given to applicants who are current members of both USPA and the Permafrost Young Researchers Network (PYRN). Undergraduate students are encouraged to apply. Apply at http://www.uspermafrost.org/. To renew your membership, please visit http://www.uspermafrost.org/

NSIDC provides permafrost and glaciers files for Google Earth
The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) has created Google Earth™ files on many different cryospheric topics such as permafrost and ground ice types and extents in the Northern Hemisphere. You can also hunt drifting ice bergs and follow the sea ice edge when having a break from permafrost!

Upcoming Meetings
APECS Workshop at the ASSW 2013
In conjunction with the Arctic Science Summit Week 2013 in Kraków, Poland, APECS will organize a 1-day career development workshop prior to the conference to help young researchers learn important skills and create new collaborations and contacts with both early career colleagues and senior mentors.
This thematic workshop will elaborate in how far the Arctic functions as a central node or hub in terms of global change from a variety of perspectives, including disciplines such as geosciences, life sciences, social sciences and others but also from a policy-making standpoint. Workshop participants will think about how the importance of the Arctic in the global system can be communicated to the general public and decision-makers.

Methane in high latitudes and assessing its climate impact: Towards an integrated research approach
After four years of international net working on methane monitoring in the Arctic, the COST Action
PERGAMON “Permafrost and gas hydrate related methane release in the Arctic and impact on climate change: European cooperation for long-term monitoring” holds an open concluding symposium on marine, terrestrial and atmospheric methane fluxes.

- Atmospheric monitoring and modeling of methane fluxes

The next IGS Nordic Branch 2013 meeting will be held in Lammi Biological Station, Lammi, Finland, 31 October to 2 November, 2013.
The meeting provides an informal venue for Nordic-based glaciologists and students in glaciology and topics related to glaciology to present their latest results. The meeting is hosted by Department of Physics, University of Helsinki.

International Symposium on Changes in Glaciers and Ice Sheets: observations, modelling and environmental interactions
The International Glaciological Society will hold an International Symposium on ‘Changes in Glaciers and Ice Sheets: observations, modelling and environmental interactions’ in Beijing, China, from 28 July to 2 August 2013.
28th Himalayan Karakorum Tibet Workshop and 6th International Symposium on Tibetan Plateau Joint Conference
The Meeting will be held in Tübingen/Germany at August 22-24, 2013. It addresses all topics of geodyamics and environment related to the Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding mountain ranges and basins.
Major themes are:
* Geodynamics (HKTW)
* Climate, hydrology and cryosphere
* Ecosystems in view of environmental change and human impact
Online registration is already open. Registration for early bird fees and field trips are available until 20 April. Abstracts need to be submitted until 31 June 2013.
The 1st International Symposium on Transportation Soil Engineering in Cold Regions - A Joint Conference with the 10th SHAHUNIANTS Lecture
The symposium is going to be held in October 10-11 in Xining, China. It aims to provide an opportunity for researchers and practitioners in the transportation community to share the latest research advances and experiences in the construction of transportation infrastructure in cold regions. The Shahuniants Lecture has been given regularly among Russian scientists for many years and this is the first time to have its abroad section outside of Russia.

The EGU conference was held in Vienna/Austria from 7-12 April 2013 and it was again a great place to listen recent advances in periglacial research. Among all the interesting cryospheric science sessions, some of them were new and attracted much attention. New results were presented about the recent change of sea ice in the Arctic and the Antarctic. The understanding of organic carbon release and environmental change as a result of permafrost degradation were examined. Recent advance in the creation and the use of high resolution digital elevation model in geomorphology was exposed
Although PYRN did not officially organize any session, we have already agreed with the EGU Soil Science Division the organization of a workshop led by PYRN and focused on permafrost research topics on the next EGU conference (Vienna, 27 April – 2 May 2014).
