UNC study: Resettled refugees eager to receive mental health services

A UNC pilot study has found that many newly arriving refugees who resettle in Durham and Orange counties are in need of mental health services and are eager to get that help. Those are the findings from the School of Social Work’s “Refugee Mental Health and Wellness Initiative,” a collaborative project launched last year with the nonprofit Church World Service in Durham and the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants. Richman fosters collaboration in India

Dean Jack Richman traveled to India in March to meet with one of our partner international institutions to increase opportunities for joint research and teaching. Concert fundraiser April 27 for the Teresa Ilinitch Memorial Scholarship

In memory of late faculty member Teresa Ilinitch, her family is establishing a scholarship at the UNC School of Social Work. UNC study: Assisted living communities home to more older adults with dementia

In a first-of-its-kind national study, UNC researchers have confirmed that assisted living communities are a primary provider of residential care for older adults with dementia and that an estimated 7 out of 10 adults in these residences have some form of cognitive impairment. Researchers are recommending that assisted living homes consider more training for staff, especially in medications; and improved public education to help consumers. Read story
