Leaving LA for DC - Tomorrow!

(To invite your friends in LA to tomorrow's March 1 kickoff, send them to the website or Facebook event)

As you may know, starting tomorrow I am taking part in a cross-country walk - the Great March for Climate Action - with hundreds of other people to inspire action on climate change. We leave in the morning from Wilmington, CA (near Long Beach and Los Angeles) and will be walking 14 miles a day, six days out of seven for the next eight months until we arrive in Washington, D.C. at the beginning of November. Each night we will be camping in tents, cooking our own food, and of course meeting with local people wherever we are, supporting their local efforts, listening and learning, sharing what we have learned, and networking them with others we have met along the way.

For the last month I have been traveling up and down the west coast, seeing friends & family, and enrolling people as Virtual Marchers, supporting the march in a variety of ways. If you are interested, here is a list of ways you can support the march.

I'm writing this from our campsite in Long Beach as we prepare for the march, receiving training on good process among ourselves, how to communicate with the media, survive the physical challenges we'll face (for example the heavy rains that are predicted for our first day), and so on. We've also been continuing conversations we started online about who to ally with, how we can best inspire climate action, and so on.

I can't quite believe it's about to begin!

Much thanks to all of the people who have contributed to my being able to take part in this, especially to my long-time friend and colleague Tom Atlee. He has gone above and beyond in helping out financially, with moral support, strategic thinking, and physically packing up a lot of my gear and making sure that it got down to me here in Long Beach.

Here are a few links about the march:

* Facebook group for Marchers and Virtual Marchers - anyone who helps out in any way is a virtual marcher, even if you don't walk with us.

Life,
John
