In this month's newsletter, 'Interning Abroad' :

Why intern abroad?
When to travel?
How long to stay?
What kind of internship?
Want to learn more?

If you want to travel but not be a 'tourist' then consider spending a fun and rewarding couple of months, or more, in an international internship program.

By participating in an internship you not only gain experience in the workplace, you also get to work alongside the local people - what better way to learn the language and the culture of a new country?

While many people like to choose a more traditional 'Study Abroad Program', where you attend accredited classes at an international university, an Internship Program allows you more flexibility and more control over what and how you learn. Plus, you gain valuable skills and knowledge to add to your resume.

Monthly start dates mean that you can choose the best time of year for your program - Spring, Summer, Fall or Winter... Summer is, of course, always the most popular time, but if your schedule allows there are some great advantages to travelling at other times of the year.

Spring and Fall in Spain mean you will miss the throngs of tourists and be able to drink in the true Spanish flavor of the country. The weather will also be more pleasant (a Spanish summer in the city can get very hot!) AND airfares are cheaper outside of the summer months.

Want to miss the cold of a northern hemisphere winter? Then consider a program In South America where their summer is just beginning, or central America where temperatures are pleasant year round.

You choose - 1 month or up to 6 months or even a year! Our advice is always 'the longer, the better'. It is a common complaint among returning international interns that they wish they had stayed longer! As with any international experience it takes time to acclimatize to new surroundings, a different culture, a new language - so when choosing how long to go for you should factor this in to your decision. Companies that take on an intern have to invest time in advising and training - especially if you have a lower Spanish level - so the longer you can stay, the more benefit to them and you. That being said, not everyone is able to stay for months at a time, so for a short term option Teaching English is a great way to get a taste of life overseas and many other internship choices are available for 2 month programs.

Medical, business, graphic design, social work, journalism, law, horticulture, marketing, winery, sports, tourism, accounting, environmental science, culinary - the list is endless!!!! Whatever kind of industry you are studying or have an interest in, it is likely that there is an internship suited for you. Some may require you to have some expertise in the sector (eg. medical, law, psychology) but others are more flexible (eg. tourism, business, non-profit). For most internships some knowledge of the local language is preferred as this will be the means of communication between you and your co-workers and you will progress more quickly in your position and in the tasks you are assigned. However, there are always some options available for complete beginners.
