ParliamentAbortionVote

This is a big deal. In spite of the government's insistence not to re-open the abortion debate in Parliament, it looks as though it is now being ushered to the forefront through a motion being tabled by a young outspoken pro-choice NDP MP named Niki Ashton.

Last week Ms. Ashton from Churchill, MB, put forward a motion that "...seeks to have members of Parliament vote on whether access to abortion is a 'fundamental question of equality and human rights, both in Canada and around the world.'

It also calls on the government to make the promotion of gender equity and the support of reproductive health care priorities at May’s international summit on maternal and child health.

The motion also seeks to have the government 'lift its policy of refusing to fund international programs that support a full range of family planning and reproductive health care options including abortion.'" (ipolitics.ca / Click here to read full article.)

Our sources at Parliament have told us that there is a chance the motion could be debated prior to the summer recess if it is adopted by the NDP as an official opposition motion.

This motion provides a strong opportunity for Members of Parliament that disagree with Ms. Ashton's position to express their views in the House of Commons. In summary: this motion is "re-opening the abortion debate" on the floor of Parliament in a very tangible way.

All of this means that this is an INCREDIBLE opportunity to share with our leaders how we feel about this important issue. The renewed debate will mean our leaders have a renewed interest in what Canadians have to say on the issue.

Several groups have mobilized swiftly in the last few days to launch initiatives that give us easy ways we can be a voice at this time.

Please take a moment to do these action points. Thank you so much.

What You Can Do In Light of Ms. Ashton's Motion:

1. SEND A PRE-WRITTEN E-MAIL, OR YOUR OWN

We Need a Law has set up a page with a pre-written letter you can send to your Member of Parliament. It is super easy. Click here to go there now. Click on the link that says "Send this e-mail today."

If you would like to write your own e-mail, we encourage you to do that as well. Though form letters are great, a personal letter is even better. Click here to find your MP by postal code.

2. JOIN THE CLC YOUTH TWITTER CAMPAIGN

The Youth of Campaign Life Coalition have begun a campaign on Twitter and are calling Canadians to tweet videos expressing the this motion does not reflect their perspective.

How It Works:

Upload your videos to YouTube and TWEET them out to your MP and the Prime Minister @pmharper with the hashtag #No2Niki. If you don't have twitter, either set-up an account or e-mail your member of parliament AND CLC Youth with your video so we can tweet it out for you (youth@campaignlifecoalition.com). You can find a current list of all MPs here: http://www.parl.gc.ca/Parliamentarians/en/members.

Important Effectiveness Tip:

Please be sure to be honouring, loving and respectful in your video. It will be taken more seriously by our leaders, and go further, than an angry or dishonouring one will. Speak the truth, in love.

3. SHARE, PRAY AND PRAY SOME MORE

Please share this e-mail with your friends. To do this easily simply click on the "Share" button at the top of this e-mail.

Please take a moment to pray for our leaders and in particular Niki Ashton at this time. Let's believe that her heart would be encountered, and transformed, with the love of God.

Please lift your voice in prayer by joining the Life Prayer Wall (a virtual prayer chain for the ending of abortion). Click here to get more information or to sign up for a 15 minute weekly prayer slot.
