ELVA Newsletter - April 2012

Time has flown and this weekend sees the ELVA gathering enthusiastically organised by the International Motor Racing Research Centre (IMRRC) located at the famous Watkins Glen circuit near New York.

There are presentations by Burdette Martin who made a significant contribution to the success of ELVA in the States during the very early days, and of course Janos Wimpffen who will talk about the preparation for the ELVA book and despite the many pages and lots of superb photographs, will tell some of the stories which did not make it into print.

Unfortunately, due to other commitments, I cannot join the party this time but I do have lots of additional tales to tell as a result of my involvement since the 1970's and some of the wonderful and often amusing stories told to me by the amazing people who made such incredible cars in the crowded Sussex workshops.

I am looking forward to my next visit to the States and will have exciting ELVA news as well as the further stories to divulge! Meanwhile, our sincere thanks must go to Michael Argetsinger and all the folk at the IMRRC for suggesting and hosting this event. There will be a video recording available for those who cannot attend; for details please contact Max Neal at the IMRRC. max@racingarchives.org

For something rather different for those in the UK, this might be of interest...

Speed & Steam!

The Didcot Railway Centre in conjunction with the Williams F1 Conference Centre is offering a unique day out combining Speed and Steam on just three dates: - Saturdays 30th June, 28th July and 18th August 2012. The day begins aboard a vintage bus to the Williams F1 Conference Centre, which houses the largest private F1 museum in the world. A guided tour of this facility, which is rarely open to the public, allows time to view around 40 F1 cars with visits to the technology room, and the very impressive trophy room. Return to Didcot for lunch on board the Super Saloons followed by a guided tour around the railway centre. Enjoy a footplate ride on a steam locomotive! The days will finish at around 16.30 with tea in the Super Saloons.

Please call 01235 817200 to book tickets. Inclusive cost is £145 for the day. Spaces are very limited.

Also ...

Michael Orrit is well known for racing his Courier at various US circuits and more recently an ELVA Mk.IV sports racer. This car has been featured on various websites, including our Forum, which obviously helps to increase ELVA interest but there are some corrections needed to the early ELVA history as written. This will be updated this soon.

The Goodwood Road Racing Club ...

The Club produces a superb review of each annual Revival Meeting, and the 2011 edition, just issued, has a detailed report of the Madgwick Cup race which featured race winning cars built by ELVA.

Dion-Kremer-Revival-2011

Entries in finishing order included Dion Kremer (1st) Mk.VIII (BMW); Roger Wills (2nd) Mk.VIII(BMW); Michael Malone (7th) Mk.VIIS(BMW); Joe Twyman (8th) Mk.VII(Ford); Paul Smeeth (11th) Mk.VIIS(BMW); with DNF entries Andrew Owen Mk.VIIS(BMW); Martin Verdon-Roe Mk.VII; Paul Knapfield Mk.VIII(BMW) and Tony Planken Mk.VII(Porsche). Dion was on pole and achieved fastest lap of 1m 23.762s = 103.14mph.

There were also McLaren-Elva entries in the Whitsun Trophy of Marcus Mussa M1B; Andrew Beaumont M1B; Laurie Bennett M1B and John Bladon M1A. There were unusually no ELVA entries in the Chichester Cup race for rear-engined F/J cars, however this year will most certainly see entries for the front-engined Juniors.

Microplas-Toledo-Mk.1

Some interesting early Elva sports racing cars have become available including the Microplas Toledo bodied Mk.1, a very early car possibly #3 (UK); the aluminium bodied Mk.II (100/34) previously owned by Mickey Mishne (US); and a race ready Mk.IV (100/76)(US). Be sure to watch the website for details, updates and regular additions.

Finally, we need to have your feedback on ideas for ELVA regalia. The Polo shirts for Watkins Glen have been well received and we want to be able to offer quality items. So don't be shy ... please communicate and email your thoughts or requests. Something for the ladies perhaps?
