Now out in paperback!

Salt, Sugar, Fat by Michael Moss

(From Random House of Canada)

Salt, Sugar, Fat, is a journey into the highly secretive world of the processed food giants, and the story of how they have deployed these three essential ingredients, over the past five decades, to dominate the North American diet. This is an eye-opening book that demonstrates how the makers of these foods have chosen, time and again, to double down on their efforts to increase consumption and profits, gambling that consumers and regulators would never figure them out.

The Golden Egg by Donna Leon

(From Raincoast Books)

"As the first leaves of autumn begin to fall, Commissario Guido Brunetti's wife Paola comes to him with a request. The mentally handicapped man who worked at their dry clearers has suffered a fatal sleeping pill overdose, and Paola loathes the idea that he lived and died without anyone noticing or helping him. To please her, Brunetti investigates the death and is surprised to find nothing on the man: no birth certificate, no driver's license, no credit cards. As far as the Italian government is concerned, he never existed. And yet, there is a body. As secrets unravel, Brunetti suspects an aristocratic family might be connected to the case. But why would anyone want this sweet, simple-minded man dead?"

Command and Control by Eric Schlosser

If you do what I did - finish this book at the end of the night and then head off to bed - you’re not going to sleep. So is the doggedly researched and precisely written, yet utterly bone-chilling nature of Eric Schlosser’s latest release. The author of Fast Food Nation has come back with a critical and damning exploration of nuclear weapon security that will leave you drop-jawed. His history of nuclear weapons themselves, including a breakdown of how they managed to get so far out of anyone’s control, is woven together with a play-by-play retelling of the so-called “Damascus Incident” - one of the most serious nuclear weapon accidents the world has ever seen.

I had a hard time reconciling my enjoyment of this book with the terror it struck in to me. Schlosser’s writing is engaging and straight to the point, which can be tough to stomach when dealing with things like weapons that hold the power to annihilate all of humanity. Still, I strongly recommend it. Like Fast Food Nation before it, the world is no better off for brushing back over what Schlosser has put his expert research and writing skills into unearthing.

Superworm by Julia Donaldson

Julia Donaldson's books have been a hug hit with my son since before he was even old enough to really understand what we were reading him. The phrase 'scrambled snake' was one of the first things to cause him to erupt with belly laughs and the Gruffalo has remained a staple of bedtime reading. We are always excited to see a new story from Julia Donaldson and her latest, Superworm, lives up to our high expectations. It is the story of a very helpful worm that is captured by the evil Wizard Lizard and has to rely on his friends to save him. It is full of Donaldson's fun rhymes and familiar pictures from illustrator Axel Scheffler.
