Tad led off school meeting yesterday by sharing the latest news on the tragedy of Malala Yousafzai, the 14-year old Pakistani activist who was shot by the Taliban for her belief in the rights of girls to receive an education. Listening to Malala's struggle while sitting among 300 bright and caring students gave rise to feelings gratitude for the opportunity of St. Andrew's, disbelief in the inhumanity of her would-be assassins, and motivation to support those like Malala who risk everything for the chance at an education.

Tad captured this spirit in his latest blog post. In it he writes, "It is time for the world to reassert goodness, humanity, and courage, and it is time for all of us to understand that education is the key to world peace and to a rejection of extremist philosophies and actions in the world." You can read his full post on our blog.

Students Set for Homecoming Swing Dance

DSC 0994

Will Hughes '13 and Pep Ruckpanich '13

One of the great traditions of the annual Homecoming Dance, where "dates" are assigned by a computer (or very creative member of the VI form), are the lengths upper formers will go to ask his or her unsuspecting date to the dance. Songs are sung, fellow students are impersonated, bizarre declarations are pronounced by third parties and the list goes on. One of the more creative asks this week was a live skype conversation from Pep Ruckpanich and Will Hughes during school meeting. Pep is recovering from knee surgery and, undeterred, phoned in his ask ahead of the weekend festivities.

Students Take On Green Cup Challenge

Students have jumped into this year's "Green Cup Recycle Challenge" with an eye toward improving recycling rates on campus. During the four-week Challenge, schools from across the country compete for Bin Points by improving recycling compliance rates and decreasing contamination. Environmental Leaders make the effort to check bins for compliance and report his or her findings to the competition's website. The school received 75% compliance the first week.
