A Shadow-interpreted Auslan Performance

The Magic Flute

is a mysterious and wonderful tale following four young people's journey as they discover their own strengths and weaknesses and pass the tests of true love. It is a story of truth and light, friendship and forgiveness, told with enchanting music which continues to delight audiences all over the world.

This fully-stage 50-minute version of Mozart’s opera was devised especially for Oz Opera’s Schools Company by Tim Sexton and Christine Anketell.

The Magic Flute will be shadow-interpreted into Auslan, with the Auslan interpreters being involved as performers rather than standing to the side of the stage. This innovation offers audience members both hearing, deaf and hard of hearing, a richer performing arts experience.

Grants for a Filmmaking opportunity

Twenty Years: Twenty Stories Film Grants

The Twenty Years: Twenty Stories project will tell the stories of twenty people who have used the Disability Discrimination Act to change the lives of many.

There are currently over 4 million Australians with disability. In 1993 the Disability Discrimination Act, (DDA) which aims to promote equal opportunity and access for people with disability, made disability discrimination unlawful.

The Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC), Disability Discrimination Commissioner and Sydney Community Foundation (SCF) are working collaboratively on the Twenty Years: Twenty Stories project to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the DDA.

Through short films, the project will tell twenty inspiring stories of people who have used the Act to improve the lives of people with disability around Australia. Reaching out into the community via social media and disability advocacy groups, Twenty Years: Twenty Stories will herald the progress of disability rights in Australia and encourage greater participation in disability issues. The films are expected to be launched in March 2013.
