WHAT IS THE NEXT SURPRISE?

Big government scandals keep growing.

So many things have been occurring secretly and, in some cases, illegally in many parts of government. Each surprising new story is rapidly replaced by another story.

In the last few days, there have been a number of news stories about two different programs at the National Security Agency. One is a legally sanctioned effort to gather up phone records (not wiretapping phone calls but collecting records of calls). We were reassured for two days that no one was actually listening in on Americans, but merely gathering information that calls were made.

Then we learned about a different program that is apparently collecting a variety of information, including emails, photos, videos, etc. We were initially reassured that this program is 'mostly' aimed at foreigners. Then it was clarified that there only had to be a 51% likelihood that the target was foreign.

The more we learn the less reassuring it is.

Of course these new disclosures are only the latest of an expanding catalog of deeply disturbing and, in certain cases, almost certainly illegal actions by officials of the federal government:

  • months of lying about Benghazi;

  • the IRS scandal which is now slowly beginning to reach into Washington;

  • the report that the Justice Department secretly obtained extensive records on reporters' phone calls;

  • the news that many high ranking officials have illegal secret email accounts;

  • the EPA giving farmers names to lawyers;

  • Secretary Sebelius pressuring companies to give money to get around congressional limitations.

When officials of a very powerful federal government behave in this way, why would anyone trust this government with their private lives?

Reassurances aren't reassuring after this much dishonesty and apparent law breaking.

The interesting question is this: what comes next? What will be the next wave of scandals?
