Renewing our connections

As I prepare to travel to Spain to attend the 13th EMDR Europe Conference in Madrid I reflect on the importance of personal connections and community. So much is written about social media these days. Clearly, as a psychologist with a blog, Google+ and twitter feeds, I participate in this movement. Yet the degree to which these linkages nourish me professionally and connect me personally does not approach the experience of attending the EMDR Europe and EMDR International Association conferences. Attending live lectures and presentations bring us essential new (and often as yet unpublished) information, but the real joy of attending these programs is sitting down face-to-face and interacting in real time over tea, lunch or dinner with old friends and making new friends. This rejuvenates in an entirely different way.

How do you stay connected?

What do you do to stay connected? As I wrote last month I hope you are a member of both EMDRIA and the ISSTD. If not, I hope you will join. Both organizations support the work we do in essential ways. Both organizations offer regional and local programs some at quite moderate or no cost where you can interact with peers who share our work.

June EMDR Research Review

The June 2012 EMDR research review is available on the SonomaPTI blog which you can easily access with this link. This month's listings feature more than a dozen articles that have appeared in just the last 30 days. Our colleagues with the EMDR Association of Italy have a series of nine articles in a special issue of Revista di Psichiatria. These include a comparison of EMDR and CBT treatments of panic and a neurobiological fMRI study showing increased hippocampal volume following EMDR treatment of PTSD. Other articles address EMDR treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder and psychosis. Volume 6 Issue 2 of the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research brings us three new articles including a randomized comparison of EMDR and biofeedback/stress Inoculation training in treating test anxiety published as an homage to the life and work of our EMDR colleague, first author, Rosemary Cook-Vienot who passed away in 2008.

This month's review also features a video from Linda Curran who interviews Babette Rothschild on “Dual Awareness for treating PTSD” and shows client vignettes in which she demonstrates methods for stabilization through building self-regulation and presentification skills.

The Theoretical and Empirical Basis for Meditation as an Intervention for PTSD
This article reviews meditation as an intervention for PTSD, considering three major types of meditative practices: mindfulness, mantra, and compassion meditation. The mechanisms by which these approaches may effectively reduce PTSD symptoms and improve quality of life are presented. Empirical evidence of the efficacy of meditation for PTSD is very limited but holds some promise.

Risk factors for developing post-traumatic stress disorder following childbirth: A systematic review.
Results. Infant complications, low support during labour and delivery, psychological difficulties in pregnancy, previous traumatic experiences, and obstetrical emergencies were identified as the most important risk factors. Conclusions. We have identified both strongly associated and non-associated factors that are associated with PTSD following childbirth. While the literature is limited by methodological shortcomings, a hypothesis regarding the development of PTSD is outlined, and recommendations with respect to screening and future research are provided.

Insomnia linked to hypertension
People with insomnia may now have one more thing to keep them up at night: an increased likelihood of developing hypertension, according to a new study.

Brain scans support Freud: Guilt plays key role in depression
Scientists have shown that the brains of people with depression respond differently to feelings of guilt -- even after their symptoms have subsided.

Ketamine improved bipolar depression within minutes, study suggests
Bipolar disorder is a serious and debilitating condition where individuals experience severe swings in mood between mania and depression. The episodes of low or elevated mood can last days or months, and the risk of suicide is high.

Non-invasive brain stimulation shown to impact walking patterns
Kennedy Krieger researchers believe transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has potential to help patients relearn to walk after brain injury.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Adherence to Medications in Survivors of Strokes and Transient Ischemic Attacks.
CONCLUSIONS: PTSD is common after stroke/TIA. Patients who have PTSD after stroke or TIA are at increased risk for medication nonadherence.

THE DISSOCIATIVE SUBTYPE OF PTSD: A REPLICATION AND EXTENSION.
Study 1 included 360 male Vietnam War Veterans with combat-related PTSD; Study 2 included 284 female Veterans and active duty service personnel with PTSD and a high base rate of exposure to sexual trauma. Results provide support for a dissociative subtype of PTSD and also suggest that dissociation may play a role in the frequent co-occurrence of PTSD and borderline PD among women. These results are pertinent to the on-going revisions to the DSM and suggest that consideration should be given to incorporating a dissociative subtype into the revised PTSD criteria.
