Happy 10th Anniversary, CSI!

2004-2014

Ten years ago Alison and Arthur Hyde and longtime friends Meshack and Helen Isiaho became partners in a shared vision: a school and care center for Kenya’s AIDs orphans. What a joy to see Crossroads Springs Institute blossom, from vision to reality! Today, CSI boasts 109 graduates and current enrollment is 340, with CSI students regularly earning top marks in regional exams.

The school and care center is thriving thanks to administrators, teachers, and staff, and thanks to donors from around the world. As we look ahead to the next 10 years, please consider making a special 10th anniversary gift in celebration of all that we’ve accomplished. Crossroads Springs Africa, Inc., the fundraising arm of Crossroads Springs, is run entirely by volunteers. At least 97 percent of your gift goes directly to the school, benefiting the children, their community, their country, OUR world.

Three Priorities:

1) Quality Education Continues to be a Priority

We are proud of CSI’s 12 dedicated and talented teachers, who deserve much credit for the school’s No. 1 ranking in its division. CSI teachers work six days a week as required by Kenyan law, and also have responsibilities outside the classroom. Nicholas Kisala, shown in the top photo at left, teaches Grade 7 science, social studies, English, and math. He also is responsible for the 4K Club (a student garden club) and assists the debate team.

Please consider a Special Anniversary Gift of a teacher’s salary ($2000 for the year). The gift of education!

2) Food and Health Care

Students learn best when they are healthy and well fed. The CSI kitchen staff cooks continuously from dawn to dusk in huge vats over wood fires. They serve nourishing, simple foods, including millet porridge, rice, tomatoes, onions, beans, greens, and ugali, a traditional staple similar to grits. Because meat and fruit are expensive, they grace the tables only every other week. It costs $12 per month to feed one child and $4,080 per month to feed all of the children.

Please consider a Special Anniversary Gift to feed 100 children for a month…$1200 will do it!

3) Co-curricular Activities

A quality education is more than just book learning. At CSI, the primary co-curricular activities are music and scouting. Both of these programs are standard in Kenyan schools, but for our orphan children at CSI, the participation and competitions serve as valuable confidence-building and normalization opportunities. CSI placed in the top five in the Kenyan National Music Competition two years in a row, and the scouts (both boys and girls) represent the Hamisi District in retreats and competitions.

Please consider a Special Anniversary Gift of $1000 to support the music and scouting programs at CSI

A Prized Goat

CSIgarden clubgoat 2

The CSI garden club bought a goat with money the students earned selling vegetables. Seen in the photo above, this goat represents so much--an education in agriculture, farming, and business, not to mention important life lessons in cooperation and setting goals.

The Van Fund

van2

A school van is essential to Crossroads Springs, as some children live as far as 10 miles away. Driver Patrick Wakkesa, shown above, says, “These are my children, I could not leave one by the roadside.” An American donor has offered a matching grant of up to $10,000 to help keep the van in working order. Please consider giving to the van fund.
