Dear ISAT 252/341 Students...

Drs. Radziwill & Benton are excited to announce your first collaborative assignment for next semester! It will be due Monday, January 7th so read this message carefully!! You will need to figure out how you will contribute to this assignment along with the other members of your soon-to-be-community, but more on that later... First, a little background info.

This semester, we're exploring how to create a multiple-section learning community based on the Ten Principles of the Burning Mind Project. Recent research shows that communities that honor values like these develop a culture of breakthrough innovation like what you see in Silicon Valley and companies like Google--precisely the kind of innovation culture that employers are trying to figure out how to create in their own companies. So in addition to being a fun experiment this semester, this learning community will also provide you with the opportunity to learn more about collaborative innovation, which is a rapidly growing need among businesses and organizations across industries.

Gifting

Core to the Ten Principles is the concept of gifting. In a gift economy, what you work on is "motivated by passion, called forth by the needs of the community." For more on gift economies, watch this 3-minute vid by Charles Eisenstein.

So, we're kind of turning the concept of a class on its side this semester...to see what happens. Instead of asking, "What can I get out of this class?" we want you to ask yourself...

What value can I bring to my fellow students this semester?
What value can I add to this learning community?
What value can the teams I work with add tot he local community, or society in general?

And there are other positive outcomes, too! You'll have the chance to...

Create really useful software programs and/or simulations that can be included in your professional portfolio or resume
Find things you're truly good at (your "gifts") which you can then contribute to employers or other causes within your local community
Leave a legacy in the form of new lab exercises, allowing future students in these classes to benefit from what you have learned and explored this semester

The more value we can add to the community (and ultimately to society) through our work in these classes (right NOW!), the greater value your ISAT degree will have as an indicator of your ability.

The Assignment

oh the places youll go
1. Watch this video
2. All of you together as a community RE-CREATE this video in your own very special ISAT way.

"What way is that?" you might ask. That's up to all of you--collaboratively--to figure out!

The Rules

There is only one rule:

1. EVERYONE MUST PARTICIPATE

No spectators allowed. Everyone must contribute at least one thing that is in accordance with their skills, interests, and abilities. Maybe it's recording a line in the video, or maybe it's editing, or adding cool words to the video snippets, or organizing everyone, or figuring out where to launch the video... It does not have to be a big thing, but it has to be a thing. We will celebrate the beginning of the new semester by watching this together on the first day!

Ok, so feel free to email Morgan (morgan@burningmindproject.org) or Nicole (nicole@burningmindproject.org) if you have any questions, but don't be surprised if we tell you to work it out with your community. :)

Nicole and Morgan
