Help for Babies & Moms with Postpartum Depression

Medical research on infant massage documents extensive benefits for babies, including profound effects for those who suffer from premature birth and other challenges.

Studies also show dramatic stress reduction for parents and improved family interaction with even short-term practice of infant massage.

While training to teach, I was especially moved to discover how infant massage can help mothers connect with their babies despite struggles with postpartum depression, helping them both to thrive: (Postnatal Depression Study Findings)

▪ Depressed mothers who learned to massage their babies showed twice as much improvement on depression rating scales compared with a control group.
▪ Massaged babies exhibited less crying, greater weight gain, improved sociability & soothability temperament scores, and lower stress levels.
▪ Mother-baby pairs sharing infant massage demonstrated consistent and marked improvement in the quality of their interaction.
