This World Health Day (7 April) focused on high blood pressure. The HelpAge network carried out a global survey that revealed a lack of information, screening services and available medication for older people, particularly in rural areas. See the full results here.

Increasing public awareness and early detection are key to tackling high blood pressure, says a new global brief by the World Health Organization.

Violence against women not only affects girls and women of reproductive age – but continues into older age, says the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in its Agreed Conclusions from its 57th session.

HelpAge was at the event highlighting specific issues regarding violence against older women.

A new report called The Situation of Older People in Myanmar reveals new evidence on how older people contribute to society and family.

The research, produced with the Myanmar Government with support from the UN Population Fund, fills a knowledge gap needed to develop health, care and social protection policies for the country’s rapidly ageing population.

The number of Syrian refugees continues to increase and their situation in camps has become more severe.

HelpAge has shared the experiences of older people arriving at refugee camps at night, as well as the difficulties they face regarding health, food and wellbeing.

As discussions on the post-2015 development agenda continue, HelpAge has released a summary of five principles for age-proofing the post-2015 development framework.

They were presented at the UN High-level Panel meeting on the post-2015 agenda in Bali last month.

Upcoming events

The Overseas Development Institute (ODI) is hosting an event focusing on how inequality should feature in the post-2015 development framework. HelpAge, Sightsavers and other partners will participate. Join us at the event in London on 18 April. Register at the ODI website.
The Centre for Research on Ageing at the University of Southampton in the UK is offering 15 scholarships for students from Commonwealth countries for the MSc Gerontology (Distance Learning) programme in 2013-14. Applications are due by 17 May.

Recent events

The HelpAge network's Age Demands Action on Health campaign on 7 April saw older people in 26 countries meet their governments to press them on health commitments they made in previous years.
The Global Consultation on Population Dynamics in the post-2015 UN Development Agenda took place on 11-12 March, in Dhaka Bangladesh. Read the outcome document.
Consultation on Advancing Technological Innovation for Older Populations in Asia, 20-21 February, Kobe, Japan, discussed including older people's needs in technological innovations in healthcare.
