Welcome back to League Lines, the quarterly newsletter of the Junior League of Greater Princeton! In this, our Summer 2013 issue, we are using a new medium - the electronic newsletter - to see if it meets the needs of our readers as well as it does the production team's! We feel positive about going "green" and love the quality of the graphics and photos we can provide in this medium. However, during the year, we will also be sending out print copies for those who prefer a hard copy. If you wish to use a different email to receive this mailing or wish to remove yourself entirely, please contact us or see below for instructions. Thank you for your interest and continued support, moral and financial, of the Junior League of Greater Princeton. Together we can achieve great things!

Enjoy!

Many Junior Leaguers started their summer at The Bar, but this Bar is an exercise class that will whittle your waist and trim your tush, just in time for summer! Jenn and Amy, the owners of the beautiful new Bar Method Princeton studio, near the Windsor Green shopping center, hosted two classes on Thursday June 13 and Wednesday June 19, to support the JLGP’s Stuff the Bus school supply drive.

All proceeds from the classes, $400 in total, go towards filling the backpacks with all the supplies a student needs to return to school with confidence. This is the second year the JLGP is partnering in this effort with United Way of Greater Mercer County staff and volunteers and the 217 Church, to solicit school supply donations to literally stuff the yellow school bus! Volunteer openings and locations will be posted in the near future. Please join us for this very worthwhile effort to support students in the Mercer County area.

The Bar Method™ workout creates a uniquely lean, firm, sculpted body by combining the muscle-shaping principles of isometrics, the body-elongating practice of dance conditioning, the science of physical therapy and the intense pace of interval training into a powerful exercise format that quickly and safely reshapes and elongates muscles. Girl Rising, a groundbreaking new documentary, spotlights the stories of nine unforgettable girls born into unforgiving circumstances, capturing their dreams, their voices and their remarkable lives. The Junior League of Greater Princeton, specifically Lauren Sgro and Christy Garrison, organized and promoted the screening for the Princeton community at Marketfair Mall on July 24th. 100 reservations were secured early to ensure the screening would go forward, and in the end, the showing sold out!

Directed by Academy Award-nominee Richard E. Robbins and narrated by Cate Blanchett, Priyanka Chopra, Selena Gomez, Anne Hathaway, Salma Hayek, Alicia Keys, Chloë Moretz, Liam Neeson, Freida Pinto, Meryl Streep, and Kerry Washington, the movie is at the center of 10x10 – a global campaign to educate and empower girls.

“If to see it is to know it, this film delivers hope; reasonable, measurable, tangible hope that the world can be healed and helped to a better future," said Meryl Streep, one of the film’s narrators.

Girl Rising premiered on March 7th, the eve of International Women’s Day, and has since been screened more than 1700 times at hundreds of theaters around the country, thanks to the efforts of passionate local organizers.

The screening drew a large number of attendees from outside the League. All were greeted at the entrance to the theater by the JLGP Membership team as well as receiving an information sheet about the League and girls’ education as they entered the theater.

According to Sgro, “This movie aligns so well with the work the League does and is a great way to introduce community members to the League if they aren’t familiar with our work.”

During it’s more than 90 years of work in the Greater Princeton community, the Junior League has created, supported or implemented numerous programs to support the education and empowerment of women and girls locally. For example, our ROCKETS (Raising Our Children’s Knowledge by Educating Through Science) program focused on bringing hands-on science into local at-risk classrooms. This year we partnered with Dress for Success Mercer County to support 18 local un- or under-employed women working towards new or better job opportunities.

“Girl Rising is about the world-changing power of educating girls,” said Holly Gordon, Executive Director of 10x10. “I am incredibly moved by the thousands of individuals, businesses and organizations who have stepped up to bring this important film to movie theaters and communities around the country. Girl Rising is the centerpiece of our global campaign, and these organizers are the foundation. Together, they are driving transformative change one community at a time.”

A portion of Girl Rising ticket sales go to support girls’ programs around the world through the 10x10 Fund for Girls’ Education. The Fund is distributed to 10x10’s high-impact network of non-profit partners who are working on the ground: A New Day Cambodia, CARE, Girl Up/United Nations Foundation, Partners in Health, Plan International USA, Room to Read, UNICEF, and World Vision.

Girl Rising is from the award-winning producers of The Documentary Group and Vulcan Productions, with strategic partner Intel Corporation and global television distribution partner CNN Films.

Last summer, the big yellow school bus stood ready for loading at the WalMart in Hamilton Square on a Saturday morning, waiting not for students, but for shoppers to exit with donations of notebooks, pencils, crayons and other school supplies. This summer, as last, Junior League of Greater Princeton (JLGP) volunteers and their families, armed with handouts itemizing the school supplies in highest demand, will encourage shoppers to participate.

The United Way of Greater Mercer County (UWGMC) organizes the annual Stuff the Bus drive to help prepare children from low-income families return to school with pride, self-esteem, and a backpack full of supplies. Instead of monetary donations, the UWGMC asks patrons of the participating WalMart and Target stores to buy supplies and make the donation as they leave the store.

This year as last, the JLGP will donate 125 backpacks the United Way effort. “The JLGP is very happy to continue our partnerhsip with the UWGMC and 217 Church and to welcome the Trenton YMCA to our group this year. The more attention we can garner for this event, the more children receive backpacks, and that effort is in keeping with our education and empowerment goals within the League's Children's Initiative,” said Kathryn Tharney, this year’s Children’s Initiative Co-Chair who will spear-head the JLGP contribution and volunteer opportunity.

With the support of volunteers from the 217 Church youth group, Trenton YMCA and the JLGP, The United Way makes full backpacks available to children in Mercer County. Each backpack includes: crayons, markers, spiral notebooks, a binder or 2 folders, a pack of loose leaf paper, a calculator, a pencil case containing, glue, scissors, a ruler, a pack of highlighters, and a personalized note from the person filling the backpack.

Junior League participation in the Stuff the Bus event is the second in a series of activities for this year focused on children. In 2013-14, the JLGP will continue to focus on the welfare and empowerment of women and children, including programs focusing on education, health, employment, and science literacy.

This year the event will take place on August 17, 2013. JGLP members, check the membership calendar soon to sign up.

If you would like to volunteer or contribute to the cause, please contact our Children's Initiative at community@jlgp.org.

For those of you who have not heard, the JLGP is working on their first cookbook in 30 years!

The JLGP Cookbook Committee is currently in the process of contacting local farms to find interest in being respresented in our cookbook. The thought is to have a recipe or two, fun stories or history about the farm and a profile on what the farm has to offer. We will be exploring everything from meat to produce, herbs, and dairy. Everything NJ farms have to offer. This is at no cost to the farms or vendors.

If you have a connection to a local farm and would like to contact them on behalf of JLGP, or if you are a local farmer, vendor or restaurant resourcing the majority of your food locally, please contact Christy Garrison at cookbook@jlgp.org. All assistance is much appreciated on this endeavor!
