When Albert Einstein said, "example isn’t another way to teach, it is the only way to teach," he probably wasn't thinking about leadership in exactly the same way I was while watching Tad and Elizabeth Roach, and about two dozen other teachers and staff smile mud-laden smiles after completing Delaware Mud Run this week. When the School leadership stands up and asks students to run through five kilometers of mud and obstacles on their only day off to help raise money for the Leukemia Research Foundation of Delaware it might not seem like the easiest sell.

You'll see from all the pictures that students came out in droves. Most ran, but many provided that much appreciated extra boost (and laughter) from the side. It was one of those classic St. Andrew's days from the SAS team that won the team competition to the busload of VI Formers who stayed to help clean up the site after everyone else had gone home. In the end, 4,000 mudders from around the region raised over $200,000 to help provide better therapies, improved patient care, and ultimately a cure for those living with cancer.

Why I Work to Live with Honor & Integrity

9200

Grayson Ahl '15

By Grayson Ahl '15

"I think that everyone has had that great, true feeling when you have completed a test and done well. The reason you did well, was because you prepared and worked hard. I would assume you would not have experienced this feeling if you received that same great grade, but got it from cheating and not putting in the hard, honest work. It is the same with athletics. When you go out and win a game on pure hard work and talent, there is no better feeling. You know that you put in the hours necessary in the off-season and during those grueling, hard practices that helped you be on top when the final whistle blew. BUT you don’t get that feeling when a referee makes a bad call or when an opposing player makes a mistake that costs the opposing team the game. This is also a form of cheating. When my Patriots cheated a few years back by filming other teams to give them an edge, it made fans like me question all of their amazing accomplishments. That great feeling of success the Patriots and their fans enjoyed, diminished very quickly afterwards. I try to live with honor and integrity to preserve that extraordinary feeling of triumph that just can’t be cheated."

Grayson delivered the above words to his classmates during class elections in the A. Felix duPont Memorial Chapel last Wednesday.

Assistant Librarian Joleen Hyde and this week's voting opportunity for students.

In addition to several election-related displays placed throughout the library, the staff has provided weekly opportunities for students to express themselves through the ballot box. Students this week voted for their favorite fiction series. Harry Potter won handily, followed by Percy Jackson in second and a tie for third between the Uglies Trilogy and the Eragon Series. Next week students will choose their favorite periodical.

Analyzing Ads in Election Season

Mason Dufresne '13 volunteered this week to offer an analysis of competing presidential campaign ads for the History Department. He chose two recent ads that specifically targeted key groups for each candidate: one from the Romney campaign aimed at young voters and one from the Obama campaign focused on "swing state" voters. It was a wonderful effort by Mason to keep his peers thinking critically about political ads. Have you seen an ad lately that you know is misleading or patently untrue?

Students Build Traditional Jewish Sukkah

Members of the Religious Studies Department led students in the construction of a traditional sukkah on the front lawn this week. A sukkah (Hebrew: סוכה‎, often translated as "booth") is a temporary hut constructed for use during the week-long Jewish festival of Sukkot. Department Chair Terence Gilheany explained the significance of the sukkah through his experience living in Jerusalem last year before students decorated the structure with flowers and leaves from nearby trees.
