THERE IS A BATTLE

***

In my early years in Uganda, one of the many things I taught in my Community Health Worker classes was how to deliver a baby that was not in the proper head-down position. Several years later, the story came to me of a Christian family in a village where I had taught, that with no midwife, had delivered a breech baby at home, based upon my teachings. Three of them had been in my classes, so when the wife of one was pregnant they practiced what they had learned. In determining the position of the baby when the mother was in labor, they realized that it was in breech position. So the sister-in-law of the pregnant mother began to slowly rotate the baby as I had taught in the class. But they added one thing. They prayed. The lady would rotate the baby a bit, hold it in place, and the family would pray. Then she would rotate it a bit further, hold it, and the family would pray again. When she got the baby turned completely around, head-down, it slipped right out, born without a problem.

Several years ago, God again brought that story back to me, only this time as a spiritual illustration. There was a lady in our church causing havoc in her family and in the church. She came from an extremely dysfunctional family, probably had mental problems, and while she claimed to be a Christian, there were no fruits of that in her life. (See Galatians 5: 19-23) God showed her to me as that breech baby in the womb, laboring to be properly born, but needing prayer to turn her into the right position. As the years went by, I could see how there would be slight progress and change in her life, then everything would stop, and prayers had to hold her in position till she could be moved again by more prayer.

About a year ago, my hopes began to rise as I saw her changing more progressively, and my burden to pray for her began to lessen. But while I was on furlough last summer, someone spoke to me of Revelation 12 – and I knew instantly it was for this lady! Revelation is a symbolic book, and God used this chapter in a prophetic manner to me. A baby about to be born, but the dragon/devil is awaiting the birth to devour the child, to prevent this new life.

Rev 12:4 ... The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child the moment he was born.

But God intervenes and saves the newly born child…

Rev 12:5 … And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne.

I knew there would be a huge spiritual battle for this lady as soon as she was “born again” but that God would intervene. And that’s exactly what happened a few months ago.

The whole chapter is a wonderful picture of the spiritual battle going on around us. I was focused on the delivery of the woman’s baby, and how enraged the dragon was that he missed destroying the child. But in rereading this story just the other day, I realized the part I’d forgotten, the part we’ve also been dealing with the past few months.

Rev 12:12 … But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short."

Rev 12:17 Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring--those who keep God's commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.

I recently read an old sermon by the late David Wilkerson who said that the devil knows his time is short; it’s that time between when we pray a prayer and when God answers that prayer. So he will do whatever he can to disrupt that answer – to prevent that child from being born.

I am happy to report that the “child” I prayed for all these years is doing well. And the rest of us have survived the battles…

Rev 12:11 They triumphed over him [the devil] by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.
