Chorale celebrates 125th with songs from the past

The SC Chorale went on their annual Spring Break tour last month, visiting Iowa, Illinois, and Kansas cities and towns. As one way of celebrating the legacy of music at Sterling College over the past 125 years, chorale director Mark Clark agreed to have the students learn and perform two of the most well-known and beloved choral benedictions from our past.

"My God and I" was the chosen benediction for all concerts directed by Professor Leon Akin who himself graduated from SC in 1936 and then returned to teach from 1940-1979. Prof. Akin did take a leave of absence from the College during the war from 1942-1946, even becoming a prisoner of war before returning to finish his 35-year career as a professor at SC.

Dr. Diane Lewis taught in the SC Music Department from 1990-2004 and closed each of her performances with "Song of Simeon." While at SC, Dr. Lewis took a sabbatical to complete her doctoral work.

Alumni at each performance were invited to join the chorale in singing these two songs. This was a treasured part of each performance for alumni and students alike.

The Sterling College YouTube channel allows you to see video of "Song of Simeon" as performed at the home concert this past Palm Sunday at the Sterling United Presbyterian Church.
