This month, Garrison Studio donated several pieces of artwork and a session to the Junior League of Greater Princeton’s Artful Palate event held on March 2nd. JLGP is a wonderful organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. For more information about JLGP or to inquire about membership, go to www.jlgp.org.

Now we are preparing for PPA Charities Celebration of Smiles Day on April 6, 2013. For a minimum donation of $24, you'll receive the gift of a portrait mini-session and a desk-size portrait of yourself or a loved one. 100% of your donation goes to Operation Smile, which can repair a smile for as little as $240!

To book a session, contact christy@garrisonstudio.com. The day is almost booked!

As the winter season comes to an end, so do the many dark colors in your wardrobe. Spring is just around the corner, so here are some tips to getting the most out of the rainbow, without over-doing it.

The most fashionable way to bring in those bright spring colors is through accents in a neutral outfit. For example, a bright pair of shoes, a colorful statement necklace, or even a neon belt are all accessories that can safely be paired with a neutral outfit, for a successful spring look! The key is to keep the color minimal, but present. Remember that the more vibrant or overwhelming the color, (or pattern for that matter) the more attention will be drawn to that area. So if you aren't comfortable showing off your waist with a bright belt, make sure that you instead surround it with low-key colors.

Also as we are all trying to shed those extra winter pounds, here is a good way to hide your least favorite aspects. Darker colors are the most pleasing on the body because they tend to hide your least favorite feature. But if you are proud of your efforts in the gym lately, and are ready to show off your figure, lighter colors (especially white) draw the eye. So be wise when contemplating your wardrobe, and make choices that will please you and your figure.

With spring showers just around the corner, our weather can jump from sunny skies to cloudy and overcast from week to week. And contrary to common belief, you don’t have to have a sunny day to create the best images. In fact, a little cloud coverage can actually provide more even lighting on your subject, while help eliminating squinty eyes and harsh shadows. So what do you do on a rainy day to still capture memories? Here are a few ideas just for you.

Shoot under an awning or patio covering. The indirect light that you will have when you are outside, but still under some shade can actually create some of the best lighting for your subject. Watch your subjects face and see how the light hits them. When you see they have the best lighting on their faces is the best time to shoot.

Shoot next to a window. When your child is looking absolutely adorable in their dress ups and its pouring rain outside, take them to the closest window and turn your flash off for some beautiful naturally lit shots. That subtle and soft lighting can make for the best images!

Take advantage of the overcast skies. Believe it or not, photographers love an overcast day. The sun can create too many harsh shadows on the subject, so a little cloud coverage can help diffuse the sun and create some very nice lighting on your subject. So don’t be afraid to head outside for photos even when the sun is hidden.

Here’s a quick list of things you can do to help celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this year!

1. Dye your food green- milk, pancakes, eggs, smoothies, everything!
2. Play some Celtic or Irish Pub Songs on your Pandora or other internet radio stations.
3. Google fast facts about St. Patrick’s Day to share with your family. Do you know who St. Patrick is?
4. Eat Corned Beef and Cabbage with potatoes (or other Irish foods) for dinner.
5. Build a trap with your kids to catch a leprechaun, lure him with Lucky Charms, and when he “gets away” be sure he didn't for forget to leave a little treat inside the trap.
