What I Know About Love Now That I'm In My 30s

When I first sat down to write this story -- single, with a mid-30s birthday looming -- I went into default self-deprecating humor mode. "I have a learning disorder," I typed before realizing that this self-effacing I suck at love; pity-me-for-getting-older-crap is neither funny nor true. Women are programmed to think that time is not on their side. But the smart ones know that it is. Let me explain.

A year-and-half after my partner of six years left me in the middle of the night for another woman, I finally have the hindsight to look back on the situation and count my blessings. Up until now, I cursed my ex for leaving me single at an age where the majority of my peers are in relationships. It was time, and only time, that allowed me to see that though not all the memories are happy ones. Realizing that has given me a sense of what I want out of a partner and what I just won't tolerate.

Think your biological clock is ticking? (Maybe it's not)

An American academic has some refreshing news for 30-something women who are growing tired (at best, and irritated at worst) at the barrage of messages about the deafening biological clock that should be ticking in their ears.

Jean Twenge, a prominent psychology researcher at San Diego State University in California, writes that the situation may not be as depressing as it appears – and that women who haven’t yet found a mate or who don’t yet have a plan need not slap a spinster sticker on their forehead at the ripe old age of 36.

The Eight Degrees of Singlehood: Where Do You Fall On the List?

“So, are you single?” It’s a question we expect people to have one of two answers to: Yes, or no. You’re either single or you’re not.

But what about all the various degrees of singlehood? Some single people I know haven’t been on a date in years; others are on a date every night; still others haven’t officially declared themselves paired off, but spend most of their free time with the same person. Where do you fall on the spectrum?

1) The Single Still Mourning Their Last Relationship

Your last relationship was a doozy: a Nicholas Sparks-worthy tale of passion, love, and resentment. You might feel like you need a few years to tend to your depleted emotional wells after that break-up. In the meantime, you may find yourself half-heartedly dating, but your heart’s just not into it yet. Instead, you’d rather talk about your last relationship to your (very patient) friends. Don’t worry — we’ve all been there.

Today, some of my good friends and I accompanied our friends father to the Pride Parade in Toronto. Not only did we attend, but we were actually a part of the incredible event by walking in the parade alongside her fathers float.

It was decorated with mostly pride flags, some streamers and an odd windmill. Most importantly all who attended was filled with cheer and energy and were prepared for a fun day of supporting our gay community.

It was a monumental day in my books, walking and cheering in one of the largest parades in the world. The crowds spirit was incredible, it was such an amazing experience, one I will never let myself forget.
