The CHN e-newsletter is our show of gratitude to the loyal market customers at our many events around the Central Coast. It will serve as a site for seasonal updates, "plant of the month" specials, the "ask a nurseryman" section, links to our partners, and a whole lot more. New for 2012 will be a category which features highlights from our tours of clients gardens in 2011, as well as a "project" page which summarizes some of our recent landscape installations. The e-newsletter is a way to stay connected with our thriving and knowledgeable garden community. Please send us your comments on how to make this e-newsletter more useful to all, and don't forget to pass along the link to a friend!

Happy Planting,
Nathan Krupa (owner/grower)

Crescent Hill is proud to help with ideas for the unique Holiday gift sure to suit the fancy of any plant lover. Instead of the quickly outgrown clothes or fad gift soon to find the back of the closet, why not give the gift that can last a lifetime? A whole treasure trove of winter bloomers are now shining at the nursery, ready to provide cheer to any yule-tide setting. Whether used as a great gift to the plant enthusiast or as an accoutrement to the Holiday decorations, plants are an offering that can be enjoyed for years to come. Some customers bring plants like Fuchsia triphylla 'Firecracker' or the above pictured Coprosma 'Rainbow Surprise' inside for the holiday season, permitting their bright holiday colors to punctuate the seasonal decor. Furthermore, avid gardeners know the benefits of planting in the fall/winter, when the cyclical rains sink roots deep and yield already established plants come springtime. The timely and thoughtful gift will certainly be appreciated. Gift Certificates make the perfect stocking stuffer!!! Crescent Hill is also excited to offer an expanded range of holiday wreaths and pine cone decorations sure to expand the visual and olfactory senses alike. We have been out scouring the hills in search of local greens, berries, and cones that have yielded some amazing combinations sure to add cheer to the holiday celebrations. Why purchase expensive plants only to have them eaten by our friends from below? Protect your investment in three sizes: 1 gallon baskets are $3.50 each or 2 for $5, 5 gallon baskets are $5 each, and 15 gallon tree sized baskets are $8 each.

Nursery tours are encouraged. Please come out and see our 2 acre facility in Watsonville. With over 250 varieties grown, the growing grounds are turning into a little botanical park. Please call for an appointment. Groups are welcome.

PLANT OF THE MONTH

IMGP2798

Even dried wreaths can make a beautiful display. This Protea wreath with Grevillea Red Hooks and Leucadendron Silvan Red was photographed last week, still hanging 1 year later, at a clients home entry.

Holiday Decorations

As the time of Rudolf and Frosty draws near, we are once again reminded of the need to decorate the home for Santa's pending arrival. This year Crescent Hill has chosen to commemorate our 10th year in business with an expanded palette of seasonal decorations sure to warm the mind and body through our cool winter nights. Wreath season is in full tilt, and the elves have been tirelessly roaming the hills in search of the finest local materials to adorn the doors of our Central Coast clients. We have collected Redwood, Pine, Eucalyptus, Cedar, and Bay greens to bring the forest, and its associated aromas, right into the home. Protea family members Grevillea and Leucadendron provide greens which give a unique and long lasting holiday display. Cones and berries from all parts of California's vast natural reserve have been used to punctuate and add interest to the creations. As always, all wreaths are backed in Redwood, allowing the soaking of the wreath to extend its life cycle. Wreaths are available in 14" and 18" sizes to accommodate most door or table dimensions . No matter your denomination, wreaths are a great way to add some holiday cheer. They also serve as a great gift for loved ones, or the ideal unusual gift for the mailmen, teacher, elderly neighbor, or any hard-to shop-for person on your list.

This year the elves have also given Crescent Hill an unexpected early gift when they lead us to a whole sleigh-lode of huge Sugar Pine cones fresh from the Sierra Nevada Mountains. These cones are 12-18" long and alone make a statement as part of the Holiday display. We have been busy crafting these cones into wonderful table, buffet, or mantle arrangements to bring a touch of the outdoors into the home. Mounted on firm redwood bases, and decorated with the color and feel of the season, these pieces are sure to generate conversation for years to come.
